Warm-Dense-Matter State of Iron Generated by Intense Heavy-Ion Beams EI Scopus CPCI-S SCIE

Abstract :

The hydrodynamic behavior of a cylindrical solid target, heated by the intense heavy-ion beams, was simulated. The target was of the LAboratory PlAnetary Science (LAPLAS)-type geometry, as described by Tahir (LAPLAS). An iron target irradiated by the intense heavy-ion beams, with parameters available from the planned High Intensity Accelerator Facility or Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, Society for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt, Germany, will transform to the warm-dense state, similar to the situation that exists in the planet interior. The dependence of the achievable state of iron on the outer-shell material and beam location was investigated with Medusa-code simulations. The simulation results show that the compression of inner iron is significantly influenced by the density-to-mass ratio of the outer-shell material and the location of the beam heating. Using the LAPLAS geometry, a uranium beam of 800 MeV/u, and 1.5x10&#x00B9;&#x00B9; particles per pulse, our simulations show that the warm-dense-matter regime for iron is obtained. Details depend on the yet unknown equation of state and will be measured when this beam intensity is available in a couple of years. IEEE

Functional expression of olfactory receptors using cell-free expression system for biomimetic sensors towards odorant detection. EI PubMed Scopus SCIE

Abstract :

How to obtain sufficient functional olfactory receptors and coupled to transducers with high efficiency are crucial to biomimetic olfactory-based biosensors. In this study, a cell-free expression system was employed to prepare functional olfactory receptors that were utilized as sensitive elements for biomimetic olfactory receptor-based biosensors. A nematode olfactory receptor, ODR-10, was used as a model of olfactory receptors and expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) cell-free expression system. To improve the coupling efficiency and obtain the on-chip purification, a His6-tag was expressed as a fusion to ODR-10, which makes the expressed ODR-10 capable of selectively binding to the sensor surface modified with anti-His6-tag aptamers. Electrolyte-insulator-semiconductor (EIS) sensors were utilized as the transducer to measure the capacitance changes induced by the ODR-10 responding to its natural ligand, diacetyl. The results show that ODR-10 was successfully expressed using E. coli cell-free expression system and the expression could be promoted by adding 0.5% Brij58 as the detergent. Capacitance measurement results indicate that this olfactory receptor-based biosensor can detect diacetyl with high specificity and sensitivity. Concentration-dependent linear response to diacetyl ranging from 0.01 nM to 1 nM was obtained. The detection limit was as low as 0.01 nM. All the results demonstrated that the cell-free expression system provides a new approach for the preparation of functional olfactory receptors, which have great potential to be applied in biomimetic sensors towards chemical sensing.

Recently, extended mixed dislocations were observed at a [001]/(100) low-angle tilt grain boundary of a SrTiO3 bicrystal because of a slight twist between the two crystal parts. The b = a[201]/(100) mixed dislocations at the grain boundary dissociate into three dislocations with Burgers vector b of a/2[101], a[100], and a/2[101], respectively. A structure model has been proposed in particular for the dislocation cores of the two partials with b = a/2[101] based on the high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) images acquired by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). However, the details of the atomic structure and the chemical composition of the dislocation cores remain unexplored, especially for the b = a[100] dislocation that is evidently disassociated into two b = a/2[101] partial dislocations. In this work, we study the further atomic details of the extended mixed dislocations, in particular the local chemistry, in a SrTiO3 bicrystal using STEM, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy techniques. By these atomic-scale imaging techniques, we reveal a unique feature for the atomic structure of the b = a[201]/(100) extended mixed dislocation, which we named as local crystallographic shear (LCS) structures. In addition, we identify a rock salt FCC-type TiOx (x = 0.66-1.24) phase at the locations of the extended mixed dislocations. In contrast to the insulating TiO2 phases, the TiOx phase is known to exhibit very low electrical resistivity of only several μΩ cm. In this regard, the extended mixed dislocations of SrTiO3 comprising the FCC TiOx phase may function as the conducting filament in resistive switching processes by completion and disruption of the TiOx phase along the dislocation cores through electrically stimulated redox reactions.

Gram-Scale Production of Graphene Powder via a Quasi-physical Process and Its Application in Electrode Material for Lithium-Ion Battery EI SCIE

Abstract :

Graphene powder is an attractive conducting additive for the electrodes of lithium-ion battery (LIB). However, the practical application of graphene is hampered by the lack of reliable methods for its production. Here, the authors report a promising method for the synthesis of graphene powder, which exhibits the functionalities both in gram-scale production and high-quality products. As a validation, the authors show that the introduced graphene matrix can greatly improve the electrochemical activity and cycle stability of the Co3O4 nanoparticles. Typically, when 40 wt% of graphene is introduced, the obtained Co3O4/graphene nanocomposite can stably cycle up to more than 50 cycles with a reversible capacity above 530 mAh g−1. Simultaneously, a limited initial irreversible capacity less than 40 mAh g−1 is also achieved. The attainment of such properties in Co3O4/graphene nanocomposite offers the prospects for the practical applications of graphene in industry for better LIBs. © 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Boosting the Yield of MXene 2D Sheets via a Facile Hydrothermal-Assisted Intercalation. PubMed SCIE

Abstract :

Ti3C2T x (MXene) exhibits attractive properties in different applications. However, traditional synthesis leads to unsatisfactory yield of two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2T x, e.g., lower than 20%, which stems from the strong interactions of potential Ti-Ti bonds and residual Ti-Al bonds between the adjacent Ti3C2 layers, hindering the effective intercalation and delamination. Herein, we propose a facile hydrothermal-assisted intercalation (HAI) strategy to boost the yield of 2D sheets, achieving a record high value of 74%. This HAI assists the diffusion and intercalation of reagent effectively, promoting the subsequent delamination; meanwhile, an antioxidant is applied to protect these Ti3C2T x from oxidation during the HAI process. Therefore, massive Ti3C2T x 2D sheets can be easily synthesized. Thanks to the synergistic effect of high conductivity and substantial terminated functionalities, these Ti3C2T x 2D sheets show promising application in supercapacitor, providing a high capacitance of 482 F g<sup>-1</sup>. Besides, the ultrafast carrier dynamics results of Ti3C2T x 2D sheets clearly imply the promising application in photocatalysis due to the relatively long bleaching relaxation time. Our work not only paves the way for the mass production of Ti3C2T x 2D sheets but also provides insights into their electronic and optical properties.

In this work, a label-free Ag nanocluster (AgNC)-based fluorescent probe is proposed to detect tumor marker, prostate-specific antigen (PSA). In the experiments, DNA sequences containing segments complemented to different parts of PSA aptamer were used to synthesize DNA-Ag nanoclusters (DNA-AgNC). Some of the obtained specific DNA-AgNC exhibited significant fluorescence increase after hybridization with PSA aptamer. Based on this, a simple DNA-AgNC/aptamer hybridization probe was fabricated for PSA detection using fluorescence quenching, because competitively specific binding between PSA and its aptamer inhibited the fluorescence enhancement effect of PSA aptamer on DNA-AgNC. The sequence of template DNA, pH and salt concentration of binding buffer, and the concentration of aptamer were optimized. Under optimum conditions, the concentration of PSA within the range of 2–150 ng mL−1 with the detection limit of 1.14 ng mL−1 was detected (3σ; n = 7). This approach was also successfully applied to determine PSA in spiked serum samples. As is well known, this was the first report to realize PSA detection using fluorescent AgNC-based probe. This work would provide reference for construction of AgNC-based probes for detecting other proteins. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilized to deliver drugs to the intestinal epithelium in vivo. Moreover, NPs derived from edible plants are less toxic than synthetic NPs. Here, we utilized ginger NP-derived lipid vectors (GDLVs) in a proof-of-concept investigation to test the hypothesis that inhibiting expression of divalent metal-ion transporter 1 (Dmt1) would attenuate iron loading in a mouse model of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH). Initial experiments using duodenal epithelial organ cultures from intestine-specific Dmt1 knockout (KO) (Dmt1<sup>int/int</sup>) mice in the Ussing chamber established that Dmt1 is the only active iron importer during iron-deficiency anemia. Further, when Dmt1<sup>int/int</sup> mice were crossed with mice lacking the iron-regulatory hormone, hepcidin (Hepc<sup>-/-</sup>), iron loading was abolished. Hence, intestinal Dmt1 is required for the excessive iron absorption that typifies HH. Additional experiments established a protocol to produce GDLVs carrying functional Dmt1 small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and to target these gene delivery vehicles to the duodenal epithelium in vivo (by incorporating folic acid [FA]). When FA-GDLVs carrying Dmt1 siRNA were administered to weanling Hepc<sup>-/-</sup> mice for 16 days, intestinal Dmt1 mRNA expression was attenuated and tissue iron accumulation was blunted. Oral delivery of functional siRNAs by FA-GDLVs is a suitable therapeutic approach to mitigate iron loading in murine HH.

Association of Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Concentrations With Glucose Profiles in Male Collegiate Football Athletes. PubMed

Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations are associated with high risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in adults. However, it is unknown whether this is the case in American collegiate football and rugby athletes. This study investigated the associations between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and glucose profiles in male collegiate football athletes. Thirty-four collegiate athletes (13 American football players and 21 collegiate rugby football players) aged 21 years were recruited. Body fat percent and visceral fat area (VFA) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), respectively. Participants completed an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) (75 g glucose) with venous blood samples obtained at time-points zero, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min for determination of plasma glucose and serum insulin concentrations. Fasting serum 25(OH)D concentrations were also measured. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency was 17.6% and 58.8%, respectively. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were negatively associated with the increments in the areas under the curve (iAUC) for glucose (r=-0.429, P=0.011) and borderline significantly correlated with the Matsuda index (r=-0.303, P=0.082). No relationships were observed between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and other glucose profiles. Multiple stepwise regression analysis of glucose iAUC concentrations as the dependent variable indicated that the serum 25(OH)D concentrations, but not body fat indicators were independently associated with glucose iAUC (β=-0.390, P=0.025). Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were an only independent predictor for glucose iAUC in collegiate male football athletes, suggesting that the increased 25(OH)D concentrations would be helpful for maintaining glucose homeostasis.

Patients' Anticipation for the Pharmacies of Rural Communities: A Qualitative Study from Pakistan. PubMed SSCI SCIE

<i>Background</i>: Community pharmacies are an integrated part of healthcare systems worldwide. In low and middle income countries like Pakistan, the paradigm of pharmacy practice is shifting from dispensing medicines to clinical activities. There are disparities in these practices according to location. Pharmacies in urban localities are better than those in rural areas. This qualitative study was conducted to explore patients' expectations and current practices in rural pharmacies. <i>Methods</i>: A cohort of adult pharmacy visitors (aged > 18 years) that reside in rural community was selected. Consenting participants were recruited by purposive sampling technique until thematic saturation level was achieved. A total of 34 patients were interviewed. Face-to-face interviews were conducted using a semi structured interview guide. All the data were transcribed and used to originate the themes. <i>Results</i>: On analysis, a total of 20 themes were obtained. Sixteen themes pronounced the current provided services. Four themes provided some suggestions for the development of better pharmacies. On call services to provide medicines, limited free extended pharmacy services, interest in patients' wellbeing, appropriate referral, vaccination, free medical camp, medical services at home, first aid, and counseling were appreciated by patients. Patients stated that medicines are inappropriately stored in unhygienic conditions, prices of medicines are comparatively high, and medicines are substandard. Unavailability of medicines, inept dispensing, limited staffing with poor knowledge, limited working hours, and quackery promotion are challenges in rural pharmacy practice. Patients say that non marginal pricing, informative services, new legislation, and proper vigilance by officials can improve the pharmacy services in rural communities. <i>Conclusions</i>: Patients alleged that rural pharmacies perform deprived practices. To improve service, new legislation and the proper implementation of existing law is needed.

Fast decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 crystals EI SCIE

Abstract :

The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was determined in the neutral solution of ZIF-67 crystals. The fast decomposition of H2O2 can be observed by naked eyes in seconds after mixing the reactants. A crumpled surface was observed for ZIF-67 crystals after the decomposition reaction. The decomposition reaction was found to follow the first-order kinetics. Temperature-dependent studies calculated that the activation energy was 37 kJ mol−1. Based on the obtained results, a possible mechanism was proposed. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
