Abstract :

The expansion working process of a steam twin screw expander was theoretically studied. The influences of internal volume ratio, thermal parameters of inlet steam, under-and over-expansion on the recovery work of the steam screw expander were investigated. The effects of the deviation between the optimum internal volume ratio and the actual internal volume ratio on the recovery work and volume flow of the steam screw expander were analyzed. The results show that under-expansion and over-expansion can lead to the decrease in recovery work of the steam twin screw expander compared with full expansion. The decrement of recovered power by under-expansion is less than that by over-expansion when the pressure difference between the internal pressure of end expansion and discharge pressure is the same. There is an optimum internal volume ratio matching the maximum recovery work at certain thermal parameters of inlet steam. It is suggested that large scale twin screw expanders should be designed according to the under-expansion condition because under-expansion will cause small drop in the recovery work and significant decrease in the volume flow ratio.

Abstract :

A twin-screw compressor with CO2 as the working fluid is investigated experimentally for using it in NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system. Experimental measurement was conducted for the CO2 low-temperature cycle in the cascade system. The analysis of the compressor efficiencies and power consumption is performed. Mathematical expressions of the volumetric efficiency and isentropic efficiency are obtained with a regression method. The absolute values of the maximum deviations between the results using the regression correlations and the experiment data in this study are lower than 8 per cent. The effect of oil injection pressure on the compressor performance is also studied. It is indicated that the oil injection pressure of the compressor should not be too high to enhance the compressor efficiencies and decrease the power consumption on the premise of fulfilling the compressor works.

Abstract :

The synchronal rotary compressor (SRC) has been developed to resolve high friction and severe wear that usually occur in conventional rotary compressors due to the high relative velocity between the key tribo-pairs. In this study, the working principle and structural characteristics of the SRC are presented first. Then, the kinematic and force models are established for the key components-cylinder, sliding vane, and rotor. The velocity, acceleration, and force equations with shaft rotation angle are derived for each component. Based on the established models, numerical simulations are performed for a SRC prototype. Moreover, experiments are conducted to verify the established models. The simulated results show that the average relative velocity between the rotor and the cylinder of the present compressor decreases by 80-82% compared with that of the conventional rotary compressors with the same size and operating parameters. Moreover, the average relative velocity between the sliding contact tribo-pairs of the SRC decreases by 93-94.3% compared with that of the conventional rotary compressors. In addition, the simulated results show that the stresses on the sliding vane are greater than those on the other components. The experimental results indicate that the wear of the side surface of the sliding vane is more severe than that of the other components. Therefore, special treatments are needed for the sliding vane in order to improve its reliability. These findings confirm that the new SRC has lower frictional losses and higher mechanical efficiency for its advanced structure and working principle.

Rotor profile generation and geometry characteristics play a dominant role in developing twin-screw multi-phase pumps. The aim of this work is to present mathematical procedures to calculate screw rotor profile generation, design rotor Cutter tools, and rotor geometry characteristics with given stocks for twin-screw multi-phase pumps. Analyses of the profile generation of a screw rotor for a multi-phase pump are carried Out. The resulting rotor profile with different stocks is developed oil the basis of the calculation of the forming Cutter tool profile. An iso-height Contour plot is presented for describing the shape and size of the overlapped cavity of the rotors. By inspecting the iso-height contour plot, analysis of all the possible leakage flow through the inter-lobe clearance is performed. According to the iso-height Contour plot, the blowhole provides the major leakage path for the basic chambers through the overlapped cavity. The minimum normal height of the overlapped cavity has a linear relationship with the stock. The larger stocks lead to greater leakage and reduce pump performance. The leakage flow through the overlapped cavity will be aggravated and the performance of the twin-screw multi-phase pump will decline with the increasing lead of the screw rotor.
