Theme-Rheme structure in Chinese doctoral students' research writing -- From the first draft to the published paper AHCI SSCI
期刊论文 | 2019 , 37 , 154-167 | JOURNAL OF ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

This study examines the first draft and the published version of the Discussion sections of 20 medical research articles produced by Chinese doctoral students to track the changes in Theme-Rheme structure made in the process of revision. The results show that the modifications included conjunctive adjuncts and coordinating conjunctions that were used improperly in the first drafts. Half of the projecting clauses starting with the first person pronoun "we" were changed. More than half of the long, fully lexicalized pre-subject ideational components were modified so that the topic-revealing information could be reached more quickly. Most importantly, the majority of information discontinuity, represented by deviated thematic progressions, was adjusted through revision, which greatly increased the readability of the papers. In summary, the modifications in terms of Theme-Rheme structure are prominent and contribute essentially to the readability as well as publishability of the articles. Novice ESL/EFL research writers may lack and need the knowledge of the structure even though they are advanced language learners/users. It is recommended that explicit instructions regarding the structure be incorporated in a graduate-level writing class and teacher training be performed to ensure effective instruction. Controversies of bilingual education in China AHCI SSCI

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

In this opening commentary we highlight the tension surrounding the emergence and development of bilingual education programs in mainland China, which has attracted much attention in research. Scholars have contradictory views about efforts aimed at promoting and sustaining bilingualism/multilingualism through education in different parts of China. To contribute to this ongoing discussion, this special issue contains the collective efforts of scholars holding different views and examining three types of bilingual education initiatives in mainland China: bilingual education programs for ethnic minority students, the rise of Chinese-English bilingual education, and the vitality of regional Chinese varieties or dialects in major coastal cities. We contend that all the efforts to promote and sustain bilingualism in the aforementioned aspects are to some extent double-edged and require critical examination.

Abstract :

We report 2 self-paced reading experiments investigating the longevity of structural priming effects in comprehending reduced relative clauses among adult Chinese-speaking learners of English. Experiment 1 showed that structural priming occurred both when prime and target sentences were immediately adjacent and when they were separated by 1 or 2 filler sentences of unrelated structures. Moreover, the magnitude of the priming effect held constant across different lag conditions. Experiment 2 replicated the persistent priming effect and ruled out the possibility that the effect was due to verb repetition priming. Taken together, the current results suggest that recent experience with a given structure can have relatively long-lived facilitation effect on the language-processing system in second-language learners. As such, structural priming may serve as a learning mechanism for second-language speakers. (PsycINFO Database Record

Abstract :

The primary manufacturing method of zirconia ceramic crowns is computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM), but a disadvantage of this technique is material waste. Three-dimensional (3D) printing, which has been recently introduced into dentistry, has improved the processing of polymers and metals, but not yet of ceramic crowns. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the 3D trueness of zirconia crowns fabricated by 3D printing to investigate the potential application of this technology in dental ceramic restorations.A typodont tooth was prepared for a ceramic crown, and a digital crown was designed using the CAD software. The digital crown was processed either with a 3D-printing system or with a dental milling system. The crowns were scanned using a dental laboratory scanner, and the data collected for each crown were divided into 4 parts (the external surface, intaglio surface, marginal area, and intaglio occlusal surface). Finally, the trueness of each part was determined using the 3D inspection software. The 3D trueness of the crowns fabricated by either 3D printing or milling was compared by a 1-sided test (α=.05).The trueness of the external surface, intaglio surface, marginal area, and intaglio occlusal surface of the 3D-printed crowns was no worse than the corresponding trueness of the CAD-CAM crowns (P<.05).Zirconia crowns produced by 3D printing meet the trueness requirements, and 3D printing may be suitable for fabricating zirconia crowns.

Abstract :

The story continuation writing task (SCWT) is a newly developed type of integrated writing task that is observed to be able to stimulate language learning efficiently. Nevertheless, little is known with respect to what source knowledge test-takers notice and how they process the noticed information during the task. This paper contributes to the literature by investigating what and how source information is attended to and utilized in SCWT. Think-aloud protocols and retrospective interviews were collected from 19 students. In addition, nine teachers were interviewed for their perceptions about source use in SCWT. Findings indicated that the SCWT required knowledge transforming process, as the test-takers attended to both conceptual and textual aspects of the source text. The SCWT represented a unique integrated writing task, because test-takers could rely on the conceptual information for source interpretation and writing development. They could directly employ or imitate the noticed textual information in the continuation. The implications of adopting SCWT as an integrated writing task for assessing students are discussed.

Harmony in diversity: The language codes in English-Chinese poetry translation AHCI SSCI Scopus

Abstract :

Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.

THE ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF ANTI-DUMPING AND ANTI-SUBSIDY POLICIES AMONG CHINA, THE US AND THE EU: THE PHOTOVOLTAIC INDUSTRY SSCI Scopus

Abstract :

Since the end of 2011, the U.S., the European Union (EU) and China have been searching for a trade remedy regarding each other's photovoltaic (PV) industry. Based on the perspective of the value chain of Global Solar Energy PV industry, this paper examines related factors including the tax rate imposed on the PV industry, and uses the global simulation model (GSIM) to predict the trade impact and welfare effects generated from the "double-anti" policy (anti-dumping laws with countervailing duties). The results of the research showed that China has not yet formed a complete value chain of the PV industry that is internationally competitive. The economic effect of the "double-anti" policy on China as a result of the EU is more pronounced than that with the U.S. The "double-anti" policy will have a negative impact on China's low carbon economy development. The authors conclude that the development of polycrystalline silicon in China needs to be supported by forcible policy measures and targeted measures are proposed.

How does language change as a lexical network? An investigation based on written Chinese word co-occurrence networks SSCI SCIE PubMed Scopus

Abstract :

Language is a complex adaptive system, but how does it change? For investigating this process, four diachronic Chinese word co-occurrence networks have been built based on texts that were written during the last 2,000 years. By comparing the network indicators that are associated with the hierarchical features in language networks, we learn that the hierarchy of Chinese lexical networks has indeed evolved over time at three different levels. The connections of words at the micro level are continually weakening; the number of words in the meso-level communities has increased significantly; and the network is expanding at the macro level. This means that more and more words tend to be connected to medium-central words and form different communities. Meanwhile, fewer high-central words link these communities into a highly efficient small-world network. Understanding this process may be crucial for understanding the increasing structural complexity of the language system.

Abstract :

Although the TIMIT acoustic-phonetic dataset ([1], [2]) was created three decades ago, it remains in wide use, with more than 20000 Google Scholar references, and more than 1000 since 2017. Despite TIMIT's antiquity and relatively small size, inspection of these references shows that it is still used in many research areas: speech recognition, speaker recognition, speech synthesis, speech coding, speech enhancement, voice activity detection, speech perception, overlap detection and source separation, diagnosis of speech and language disorders, and linguistic phonetics, among others. Nevertheless, comparable datasets are not available even for other widely-studied languages, much less for under-documented languages and varieties. Therefore, we have developed a method for creating TIMIT-like datasets in new languages with modest effort and cost, and we have applied this method in standard Thai, standard Mandarin Chinese, English from Chinese L2 learners, the Guanzhong dialect of Mandarin Chinese, and the Ga language of West Africa. Other collections are planned or underway. The resulting datasets will be published through the LDC, along with instructions and open-source tools for replicating this method in other languages, covering the steps of sentence selection and assignment to speakers, speaker recruiting and recording, proof-listening, and forced alignment. © 2018 International Speech Communication Association.
