The impact of product returns on price and delivery time competition in online retailing EI Scopus

Abstract :

This paper studies price and promised delivery lead time (PDL) competition between two e-tailers in the context of e-commerce. Product returns are considered, which are affected by late and early delivery inaccuracies, i.e., the delay and early arrival of random actual delivery time relative to PDL. The goal is to examine whether the Nash Equilibrium exists in the competition, and to explore the impact of product returns on equilibrium solutions. We consider two cases where the sensitivities of the return rate to late delivery inaccuracy and early delivery inaccuracy are symmetric/asymmetric. The results suggest that (1) firms with lower basic return rates or lower return rate sensitivities, always quote higher prices and shorter PDLs; (2) it is not always profitable for firms whose competitors’ return parameters increase. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract :

Should complementary firms offer online personalization services to their customers, and how does the differentiated quality of personalization services affect product prices and profits? To answer these questions, we investigate a two-dimensional model of both vertically differentiated product preferences and horizontally differentiated personalization services. The asymmetric quality of basic and complementary personalization services offered by firms is examined in three cases. The quality asymmetry of basic and complementary personalization services, and the complementarity of products lead to several interesting findings regarding firms' prices and profits. We find that when differentiated personalization services are offered by firms, the profits for both firms increase in complementarity. Given the presence of complementary personalization services offered by firm 1, both firms are worse off with the quality of complementary personalization services. When quality asymmetry exists for both basic and complementary personalization services, there are win-lose, win-win, and lose-win scenarios, which depend on the level of quality differentiation in the basic personalization services offered by firm 2. Furthermore, by comparing the profits in three cases, we find that firms' profits rest in complementarity. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

In this paper, we study a group prioritisation problem in situations when the expert weights are completely unknown and their judgement preferences are linguistic and incomplete. Starting from the theory of relative entropy (RE) and multiplicative consistency, an optimisation model is provided for deriving an individual priority vector without estimating themissing value(s) of an incomplete linguistic preference relation. In order to address the unknown expert weights in the group aggregating process, we define two new kinds of expert weight indicators based on RE: proximity entropy weight and similarity entropy weight. Furthermore, a dynamic-adjusting algorithm (DAA) is proposed to obtain an objective expert weight vector and capture the dynamic properties involved in it. Unlike the extant literature of group prioritisation, the proposed RE approach does not require pre-allocation of expert weights and can solve incomplete preference relations. An interesting finding is that once all the experts express their preference relations, the final expert weight vector derived from the DAA is fixed irrespective of the initial settings of expert weights. Finally, an application example is conducted to validate the effectiveness and robustness of the RE approach.

Abstract :

Driven by large-scale promotion online, customers are becoming strategic in their purchasing behaviour, thus giving rise to pulsed demand. However, pulsed demand is dynamic and highly uncertain. it will not only undermine retailers' profit but will also increase their risks. Based on strategic customer behaviour and multiplicative demand, this paper proposes a pulsed demand model and establishes a procurement decision model within the expected utility framework from the perspective of a risk-averse retailer. A strategic customer ratio (SCR) is employed to denote the proportion of such customers in the entire customer population. We find that the optimal procurement strategy depends on a threshold - a retailer will procure only if the initial inventory level is below this threshold. When the SCR is price-independent, the procurement volume in the promotion period decreases in the selling price, and increases in the SCR in a previous period. When the SCR is price-dependent, the impact of the price in a previous period on the current procurement volume depends on the relationship of price elasticity between SCR and demand in that period. Our numerical study shows that the risk-averse procurement strategy can effectively mitigate risk without significant profit loss, and more so when the SCR becomes larger. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract :

Based on the theory of effective use and adaptive structuration theory, we propose that employees' system exploration behavior can be affected by factors related to three major components: task, system, and organizational environment. Specifically, we examine how task characteristics (job autonomy and task variety), system complexity, and innovation climate jointly affect employees' exploration, which, in turn, leads to extended use of enterprise systems. A field survey of enterprise resource planning (ERP) users yields several interesting findings. First, job autonomy and task variety directly enhance system exploration. Second, system complexity plays a moderating role by strengthening the relationship between job autonomy and exploration and weakening the relationship between task variety and exploration. Third, innovation climate, also acting as a moderator, strengthens both the impact of job autonomy on exploration and the impact of system exploration on extended use. This research contributes to information systems (IS) research by theoretically articulating that system exploration is subject to the simultaneous influences of task, system, and organizational environment factors and empirically testing these factors' main effects and interactions to shed new light on system exploration research. It also contributes to IS practice by suggesting that organizations could enhance employees' system exploration and facilitate the transition from exploration to extended use by increasing job autonomy and task variety, designing personalized training programs to reduce system complexity, and developing organizational climates that foster innovations.

Abstract :

The reliable and efficient last three mile of delivery results in enormous challenges for city logistics. In recent years, the combination of telematics based big data collection and O2O e-commerce has built the ground for time-dependent vehicle routing, which becomes extremely important in the home delivery applications. This paper proposes a logistics platform to solve the order fulfillment problem of on-demand delivery service with large quantities of orders. The problem can be considered as a special vehicle routing problem with considering the link time and cost between the store and the delivery destinations designated by customers, who are associated with time windows and vehicles with capacity. We then propose a Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is highly feasible and very potential in dealing with the present order fulfillment problem.

This study investigates an effective procurement/inventory strategy for a risk-averse retailer facing unreliable supply and stochastic demand. By using an increasing and concave utility function to describe risk aversion, we construct a basic newsvendor (single-period) model and its multi-period extension. Both models are found to have unique solutions, as the optimized expected utility is strictly concave in initial inventory level. As a result, there is a unique optimal order quantity for the effective control of supply risk. For the single-period model, the optimal order quantity is derived in its analytical form. We then show by numerical analysis that the value of the optimized expected utility is a function of the initial inventory level when the retailer is risk-averse, becomes less sensitive to initial inventory level when the degree of risk aversion decreases, and is insensitive for the risk-neutral case. This finding suggests that in our setting the inventory holding matters only when the retailer is risk-averse. For the multi-period model, we propose a solution procedure using backward induction since a direct extension of the single-period solution is impossible. We also conduct a sensitivity analysis of demand and supply with the aim of giving some managerial suggestions for demand risk control and supplier selection. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. This paper analyzes a capacity management problem in which two service providers utilize a common facility to serve two separate markets with time-sensitive demands. The facility provider has a fixed capacity and all parties maximize demand rates. When the service providers share the facility, they play a frequency competition game with a unique Nash equilibrium. When the service providers have dedicated facilities, the facility provider leads two separate Stackelberg games. A centralized system with the first-best outcome is also examined. Based on closed-form solutions under all three scenarios, we find that facility capacity competition is a prerequisite condition for not pooling the service providers. Moreover, we establish the rankings of preferred strategies for all parties with respect to the ratio of the service providers' demand loss rates, which are proportional to the time sensitivity of demand and the potential market size. Interestingly a triple-agreement situation for the pooling strategy exists if the rates are close, and the facility provider permits a request for dedicated facilities only if the service provider has an overwhelming dominance at the demand loss rate. We connect these managerial insights with strategic seaport capacity management. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

In many equipment manufacturing industries, firms compete with each other not only on products price, but also on maintenance service. More and more traditional products oriented firms are offering their customers products bundled with maintenance service (P&S bundles). In this study, we examine firms' incentive to offer customers products bundling with long-term maintenance or repair support service in a duopoly competitive environment. When providing P&S bundles, a firm need to determine the service level (in terms of average response time guarantee for the service in this paper) to offer and needs to build a service facility to handle the maintenance service requirements. Based on the analysis of three sub-game models, we characterize the market conditions in which only one firm, both firms or neither firm will offer P&S bundles. Finally, we analyze the affects of serval market factors on firms' strategy choices.

Abstract :

In the classical deterministic models of inventory replenishment policies for the deteriorating items, the in-transit deterioration is seldom considered. However, in practices. the length of lead time has a significant impact on the extent of deterioration of the fresh items. The paper proposes an inventory model in which products deteriorate in both in-transit and on-hand period with different deterioration rates under permissible delay of payment. Different facets of the permissible delays in payment were discussed. It is proved that there exists unique optimal ordering cycle to minimize the annual cost under every scenario. Numerical examples were conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Results show that the optimal ordering cycle is affected by the length of lead time and the deterioration rates, as well as the credit period.
