Microstructure, Chemical Composition and Local Corrosion Behavior of a Friction Stud Welding Joint EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

In this paper, friction stud welding technology was used to join a stud and base metal, which were composed of X65 steel. The scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) were used to investigate the localized corrosion behaviors of the welded joint. Scanning electron microscopy, metallographic microscopy and a micro-hardness tester were used to observe the microstructure and measure the hardness of the welded sample. Raman spectrometry and energy-dispersive spectrometry were used to measure the composition of the weldment before and after corrosion, respectively. The results show that there are the maximum micro-hardness and the densest microstructure in the welded zone compared with the other zones. In addition, alpha-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 are present in the welded zone. The SVET and LEIS data indicate that the welded zone has the lowest current density and the largest impedance due to the presence of iron oxides and the densest microstructure, thus showing the excellent corrosion resistance. The relationship among microstructure, micro-hardness, chemical composition and local electrochemical behavior was discussed.

Abstract :

Source term identification is very important for the contaminant gas emission event. Thus, it is necessary to study the source parameter estimation method with high computation efficiency, high estimation accuracy and reasonable confidence interval. Tikhonov regularization method is a potential good tool to identify the source parameters. However, it is invalid for nonlinear inverse problem like gas emission process. 2-step nonlinear and linear PSO (partial swarm optimization)-Tikhonov regularization method proposed previously have estimated the emission source parameters successfully. But there are still some problems in computation efficiency and confidence interval. Hence, a new 1-step nonlinear method combined Tikhonov regularization and PSO algorithm with nonlinear forward dispersion model was proposed. First, the method was tested with simulation and experiment cases. The test results showed that 1-step nonlinear hybrid method is able to estimate multiple source parameters with reasonable confidence interval. Then, the estimation performances of different methods were compared with different cases. The estimation values with 1-step nonlinear method were close to that with 2-step nonlinear and linear PSO-Tikhonov regularization method. 1-step nonlinear method even performs better than other two methods in some cases, especially for source strength and downwind distance estimation. Compared with 2-step nonlinear method, 1-step method has higher computation efficiency. On the other hand, the confidence intervals with the method proposed in this paper seem more reasonable than that with other two methods. Finally, single PSO algorithm was compared with 1-step nonlinear PSO-Tikhonov hybrid regularization method. The results showed that the skill scores of 1-step nonlinear hybrid method to estimate source parameters were close to that of single PSO method and even better in some cases. One more important property of 1-step nonlinear PSO-Tikhonov regularization method is its reasonable confidence interval, which is not obtained by single PSO algorithm. Therefore, 1-step nonlinear hybrid regularization method proposed in this paper is a potential good method to estimate contaminant gas emission source term. Abstract :

The influence of surface texture on the performance of the journal bearing operating under the transient condition is investigated by a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach. The key parameter of the current work is the displacement of the journal as well as the eccentricity ratio which better represents the actual operation of a journal bearing than the traditional approaches that rely on the steady state assumption. The results indicate that depending on its position in the circumferential direction, a surface texture may either enhance or impair the performance of a journal bearing in terms of the generation of the load-carrying capacity.

A Novel Method for Extracting Steryl Glucosides From Soy Lecithin SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

In this study, a novel method utilizing enzyme and involving simple solvent extraction steps, is developed to yield an extract with high content of steryl glucosides (SG) and acyl steryl glucosides (ASG) from soy lecithin - the by-product of vegetable oil refining. Phospholipase A(1) is used to convert phospholipids in soy lecithin into more hydrophilic hydrolysates, from which SG and ASG are separated by solvent extractions. A 3x3 full factorial design is employed to investigate the effects of two parameters (enzyme dose and reaction time) on three responses (yield of extract, SG/ASG content of extract, and recovery of SG/ASG). There are significant enzyme dose - reaction time interaction effects on all the responses, except for yield of extract. The highest SG (including ASG) content of more than 90% in the extract is achieved at enzyme dose of 0.03g and reaction time of 16h, where the yield of extract obtained is 1.43%.Practical Applications: Conventionally, steryl glucosides and acyl steryl glucosides are isolated from lipid extract and purified by chromatographic methods, which result in a small amount of high purity steryl glucosides and acyl steryl glucosides, and thus is not economic to scale up. The method revealed in this study employed an enzymatic reaction followed by simple solvent extractions, and can be easily scaled up to produce high purity steryl glucosides and acyl steryl glucosides, making them more affordable for researchers. In addition, the method also presents a new application for soy lecithin or lecithin of other plant origins, whose current applications are mostly related to the main component-phospholipids. In this study, a novel method utilizing enzyme and involving simple solvent extraction steps is developed to yield an extract with high content of steryl glucosides (SG) and acyl steryl glucosides (ASG) from soy lecithin - the by-product of vegetable oil refining.

Abstract :

A new microfluidic device for microparticle focusing and ordering in a single particle train is reported. The particle focusing and ordering are based on inertial and vortex effects in a microchannel with a series of suddenly contracted and widely expanded structures on one side. In the suddenly contracted regions, particles located near the contracted structures are subjected to a strong wall-effect lift force and momentum-change-induced inertial force due to the highly curved trajectory, migrating to the straight wall. A horizontal vortex is generated downstream of the contracted structure, which prevents the particle from getting close to the wall. In the widely expanded regions, the streamline is curved and no vortex is generated. The shear-gradient lift force and the momentum-change-induced inertial force are dominant for particle lateral migration, driving particles towards the wall of the expanded structures. Eventually, particles are focused and ordered in a single particle train by the combination effects of the inertial forces and the vortex. In comparison with other single-stream particle focusing methods, this device requires no sheath flow, is easy for fabrication and operation, and can work over a wide range of Reynolds numbers from 19.1-142.9. The highly ordered particle chain could be potentially utilized in a variety of lab-chip applications, including micro-flow cytometer, imaging and droplet-based cell entrapment.

BACKGROUNDVegetable proteins are increasingly used to stabilize oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. However, emulsions are thermodynamically unstable. Recently, high-intensity ultrasound (US) has been used to enhance the stability of emulsions. For these reasons, and considering almond (Prunus dulcis L.) as a good source of high-quality proteins, the aim of this work was to investigate the effect of US treatment on the stability of pre-emulsification O/W emulsions coated with almond protein isolate (API). RESULTSThe influence of API concentration (0.25-2.0gL(-1)), ion strength (0-500mmolL(-1) NaCl), and pH (3.0-7.0) on the stability of US-treated emulsions was evaluated. US treatment (200-600W, 25kHz, 15min) led to a significant reduction in the particles size of droplets in emulsions, increased critical osmotic pressure and additional protein interfacial adsorption, and thus the formation of more stable emulsions. The more unfolded and random coil structures of the proteins were detected at higher US power, facilitating protein interfacial adsorption. Increasing API concentrations resulted in higher stability of US-treated emulsions against untreated counterparts. The US-treated emulsions were more resistant to salt than untreated samples. In the range from pH3.0 to7.0, US treatment also enhanced the physical stability of emulsions compared with untreated emulsions. Salts reduction/substitution have gained a lot interest from food industry since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a draft guidance for salt reduction. However how changes of salts in food formulation could influence lipid oxidation is still not fully understood. Using oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by a natural emulsifier - lecithin at pH 7.0 as a model system, this study evaluated how salts affect the physical parameters of the emulsion, the chelating activity of lecithin and thus the lipid oxidation of these emulsions. Results showed that salts increased the particle size, the negative charge of the oil droplets, and the amount of iron chelated by lecithin. Lipid oxidation lag phases were shortened by addition of salts, by 1 day and 2 days for lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances measurements respectively. These results provide some new insights on the mechanisms of how salts could affect the lipid oxidation of food emulsions.

Abstract :

Lipid oxidation is a big contributor to food deterioration. The objective of this study was to develop an intelligent film for visually detecting lipid oxidation, based on the colorimetric reaction of Schiff's reagent and aldehydes the major volatile lipid oxidation products. A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film containing Schiff's reagent was formed, with the elasticity modulus of 0.27 MPa and the tensile strength of 19.17 MPa. The PVA film was exposed to various concentration (0-7.02 mg/L) of gaseous hexanal the major aldehyde formed during lipid oxidation, the color change of the PVA film was measured by CIELab scale. The color of PVA film changed from colorless to purple after exposure to hexanal. As the hexanal concentration increased, the color change of the PVA film was more obvious. A linear relationship was found between the hexanal concentration and the color change. The developed PVA film could be an indicator for lipid oxidation of food when incorporated as a minor component of food packaging.

Abstract :

In order to satisfy the teaching requirements of the digital image processing course, the teaching experimental system for this course was developed. Requirement analysis, function design, and structure design were provided successively for the digital image processing teaching experimental system, and then, the system was coded and implemented by Delphi language. With the beautiful interface, convenient operation, and strong practicability, the system has functions of basic gray level transformation, histogram processing, spatial filtering, frequency domain filtering, noise reduction, edge detection, and morphological operation. Therefore, the system can be regarded as the assistant tool for digital image processing course teaching.

Abstract :

The Fringe Projection System (FPS) and the Laser Stripe Projection System (LSPS) both have the limitations in 3D measurements. For a shiny and diffusive surface with complex shape, neither of the systems could manage it individually at a low cost. To overcome these difficulties, we propose a method combining these two ways of projections together using a laser projector, which could project fringe patterns and scanning-laser-stripes both. In this method, we obtain two disparity maps and two quality maps by FPS and LSPS, respectively. Then combine two disparity maps together by quality maps and reconstruct the surface of the object with the combined disparity map. Real experiments are carried out to verify the proposed method and to evaluate the system performance. The plain, the colored and the metal plastic mixed objects are all reconstructed successfully in the proposed method.
