Abstract :

Two multileaf gas foil journal bearings with backing bump foils and one set of gas foil thrust bearings were designed, fabricated, and used in a 100 kW class microturbine simulated rotor system to ensure stability of the system. Meanwhile, a preliminary test rig had been built to verify the simulated system stability. The rotor synchronous and subsynchronous responses were well controlled by using of the gas foil bearings. It is on the multileaf gas foil bearings with backing bump foils that the test was conducted and verified for the first time in open literatures. The success in the experiments shows that the design and fabrication of the rotor and the gas foil bearings can provide a useful guide to the development of the advanced high speed rotating machinery.

Abstract :

The stable working condition of high speed, heavy loaded rotating machinery depends strongly on the stability provided by the journal bearing. Tilting pad journal bearings (TPJB) are widely used under such situation due to their inherent stability performance. However, because of the complexity of the TPJB structure, obtaining a reliable prediction of the journal bearing's dynamic characteristics has always been a challenging task. In this paper, a theoretical analysis has been done to investigate the dynamic performance of a 4 pad TPJB with ball-in-socket pivot, emphasizing on the frequency dependency due to pivot flexibility. The analytical model containing the complete set of dynamic coefficients of the TPJB is built and the pivot stiffness is calculated and used to evaluate the equivalent dynamic coefficients of the bearing. In general, at lower perturbation frequency, the equivalent stiffness and damping increase with frequency. While for higher perturbation frequency, the dynamic coefficients are nearly independent of the frequency. Moreover, the results also show the limit value of the dynamic characteristics of the TPJB when the perturbation frequency is set to 0(+) and infinity.

Abstract :

High-speed and heavy-loaded rotating machinery require accurate prediction of rotor's response and stability, which can be characterized by the static and dynamic coefficients of the bearing support. In this paper, a theoretical study has been done to investigate the performance of a fixed-tilting pad journal bearing with ball-in-socket pivot. The analytical model is established with the flexibility of the pad pivot and turbulent effect of the oil film both taken consideration. Under such situation, the pad pivot elastic deformation and its stiffness are calculated using Hertz Contact Theory for various operating points of the rotor-bearing system. The finite element method is adopted to simulate the static coefficients of the fixed-tilting pad bearing, obtaining its oil film pressure distribution varied with the bearing eccentricity ratio. The corresponding dynamic stiffness and damping of the oil film are solved using partial derivative method. In addition, a special interest is put in investigating the effect of the series complex stiffness of the oil film and pad pivot, according to which, the equivalent dynamic characteristics are obtained. The results show that the relation between these two factors are complex and interactive, both of which have a significant influence on the static and dynamic performance of the bearing.

Abstract :

A theoretical analysis has been done to investigate the static performance of short hydrodynamic journal bearings with a generalized film thickness expression by a sum of Fourier series equation. The hydrodynamic film thickness was written into a summation of an infinite harmonic component of trigonometric function. Reynolds equation with short bearing theory is solved for steady-state operations. In this paper, the steady-state analysis of the generalized hydrodynamic bearing has been done and compared with some typical journal bearings with respect to their harmonic components of film thickness, pressure distribution and load capacity. The relationship between the k-th order harmonic component of the film thickness H-0,H-k and the static pressure component P-0,P-k was established. It was found that the value of P-0,(k) is directly determined not only by the k-th order harmonic component H-0,(k) but also the (k-1)-th order component P-0,P-k-1 indirectly produced by the previous harmonic component H-0,(k-1).This new investigation method can used to improve the performance of hydrodynamic journal bearings for shape optimization of hydrodynamic journal bearings.

Abstract :

To meet the demands of high speed and excellent stability in modern oil free turbomachinery, a hybrid foil-magnetic bearing (HFMB) was first designed by Heshmat in 2000 [1]. However, in the HFMB, the journal should be carried out in certain eccentricity and attitude angle to the center of the bearing house due to hydrodynamic force which provided by the GFB. While the magnetic force caused by the AMB would try to force the journal of the reference position which is usually the center of the bearing at all times when using a conventional PD controller. While magnetic forces were commonly linearize at the center position of the bearing with respect to journal displacement and coil current. Therefore, the fully nonlinear force to displacement and the force to current characteristics concerning the journal eccentricity effect should be applied. The main objective of this paper is to represent a kind of theoretical method to calculate the load capacity, dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of the HFMB under a specified load sharing factor. with the predetermined operational state.

Abstract :

At present, for the optimization of the parallel three degree-of-freedom bionic eye, it often takes the work-space and volume as the optimizing objective, and the theoretical motion accuracy of the bionic eye is ignored. In this paper, the inverse kinematics model of the bionic eye is established, and then its flexibility is analyzed. Finally, taking the comprehensive performance index, which is used to evaluate the work-space, volume and theoretical motion accuracy, as the optimizing objective, we use the genetic algorithm to optimize the structure parameters of the bionic eye. The result shows that the bionic eye after optimization not only meets the design requirements for the target work-space and small volume, but also has the advantages of high theoretical motion accuracy and good comprehensive performance.

In this paper, a universal methodology for investigating the static performance of hydrodynamically lubricated thrust slider bearing based on periodic harmonic is put forward. Because the lubricant film thickness reflects directly the bearing topology structure, the dimensionless lubricant film thickness in the circumference direction is expressed by harmonic functions. Next, each dimensionless pressure distribution related to each lubricant film thickness expanded term is researched. Finally, each dimensionless load capacity related to each pressure distribution is calculated. The results show the inherent relevance among lubricant film thickness expanded term and pressure field and load capacity. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Pressure Field and Periodic Bearing Structure EI CPCI-S Scopus

Abstract :

In recent years, non-circular journal bearings are widely used in industry on account of their better stability, simplicity, efficiency and low cost. In this paper, an elliptical bearing neglecting the journal eccentricity is investigated. The results show that the oil-film thickness can always be expanded into a Fourier series. And the basis function of the series is just related to the total amount of bearing lobes. Moreover, by substituting the expansion of pressure into the Reynolds equation, the governing equations satisfied by the pressure components can be obtained. The numerical results show that the profile of each pressure component exhibits the same periodic characteristics as the bearing structure. And the number of its peaks is just equal to the order of the corresponding component of oil-film thickness. Generally, the study further reveals the relationship between the pressure field and periodic bearing structure.

Abstract :

During the past decades, researchers have focused a great deal of attention on the lobe bearings because of their superior stability. In this paper, a comprehensive methodology for determining the performances of bearings is developed based on the Fourier analysis. The advantage of this method is no longer to treat each lobe as an individual partial bearing like before, but to take into account the inherent relevance and coupling effects among lobes, etc. This article firstly puts forward universal frameworks of mathematical procedure, within which two multi-lobe journal bearings, namely, three- and four-lobe bearing are investigated. For the bearings with similar topology structure, the results show that the Fourier expansions of oil-film thickness are composed of the same family of harmonic basis functions. And those functions are merely related to the number of bearing lobes N. The results also show that both the oil-film profile and pressure field of the whole bearing completely inherit the periodicity from the periodic bearing structure and own the same period 2/N commonly. Again, the simulated results construct the corresponding relationship between the expanded terms of oil-film thickness and pressure field. Further, quantitatively analyzing the variations of the pressure component indicates that as the order increases, the maximum of the pressure component decreases gradually. That provides a more convenient approach to obtain a satisfied prediction of the performance of the bearings just by using finite Fourier harmonic terms.

Abstract :

To evaluate the rotor temperature field of a high speed permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), an electromagnetic-eddy current-thermal coupled field model is constructed using 2D Time-stepping Finite-Element-Method (FEM). In the model, the electromagnetic field and the temperature field have the same meshed grids to make a node-to-node data transmission and are solved independently. The data transmission ensures the coupling of the fields and the solve order of these fields is controlled by an external program. Temperature-dependent parameters, for example conductivity, can be set in the model. Windage loss of the rotor calculated by empirical formulas is loaded to the temperature field. Distribution of the rotor temperature is obtained by a calculation example of a 100 kW, 45000 r/min microturbine generator. Experimental data are used to show the validity of the proposed model which is helpful to the thermal design of the high speed PM generator.
