Assessment of osteoinduction using a porous hydroxyapatite coating prepared by micro-arc oxidation on a new titanium alloy SCIE PubMed Scopus

Abstract :

Surface modification and material improvement is now an important way to improve the osseointegration between bone and uncemented prothesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bone ingrowth potential of porous hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings prepared by micro-arc oxidation (MAO) on Ti-3Zr-2Sn-3Mo-25Nb, a new titanium alloy. HA-coated specimens were implanted in the left proximal femoral medullary canal of beagles for 4, 12, and 24 weeks, and uncoated specimens were implanted in the right as a control. The surface morphology and phase composition were investigated with environmental scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The bone ingrowth was assessed by histomorphometry. A pull-out test was performed to assess the mechanical performance of the bone-implant interface. A porous coating was well prepared on the new titanium alloy by using the MAO-method. The bone-to-implant contact was significantly higher for the HA-coated group compared to that in the uncoated group. Mechanical tests showed that the HA-coated group had significantly higher maximum force at the bone-implant interface compared to the uncoated specimens. MAO is a suitable coating approach for this new titanium alloy. The HA coating prepared by this approach can significantly promote bone ingrowth and the mechanical performance of the bone-implant interface. Abstract :

This paper deals with the endurance life of fatigue failure (defined as a sudden drop of stress range) under constant total strain rate for a quenched and tempered (600 degreesC for 2 h) steel. The investigation is focused on the effect of annealing at 550 degreesC for 2 h on the residual fatigue life. Two influencing factors are studied: the fatigue damage degree of the material prior to annealing and the magnitude of the constant total strain amplitude. The total fatigue lives of the specimens with annealing were increased twice as that without annealing. The interpretation of the results is mainly based on TEM observations. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract :

A new technique has been developed to prepare SiC ceramic products from natural wood by C-Si reaction at high temperature. Three typical types of natural wood, i.e. pine, birch and bamboo, were selected as the raw materials. XRD analysis indicated that the SiC ceramic prepared by this technique was multi-phase solid, composed of beta-SiC and free-silicon. The cell-pipe-fiber structure of the original wood can be transmitted to the final SiC ceramics. The typical structure (cell, pipe or fiber) is in the scale 20-200 mum, and so the arrangement of small SiC grains in the original location of carbon induces observable microstructure transmissibility. The experiment results showed that this technique is a suitable new method to prepare ceramics with a bionics structure. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract :

韧性裂纹开始扩展的J积分值对于韧性断裂的工程构件是一个重要的材料性能指标.统计了三个钢种两种焊缝200多个J积分值.发现当裂纹生长量Δa<0.6 mm时,Δa与J积分值存在线性关系,可以用J=J0+K(Δa)表示,式中K=di/dΔa(Δa=a0+da),a0是J-Δa曲线与钝化线的交点.当da=0时的J值以Ji表示,它表示了韧性裂纹开始扩展时的J积分值.实验证明,只有Ji与静拉伸发生颈缩时的颈缩比功有良好的线性相关性,从而由Ji换算得KIC也应与颈缩比功线性相关(相关系数>99%),而与静力韧度无关.而韧性裂纹开始扩展以后,各个扩展量下的JR值与静力韧度、颈缩比功无任何相关性. 从J积分的条件、裂纹尖端的特征、断裂的微观机理对试验结果进行了分析.从工程应用角度出发,说明Ji与屈服强度与强度极限之比(称屈强比)无关,低屈强比不是保证缺陷(或微裂纹)抵抗其扩展的有效方法,有效的方法是提高强度的同时,不降低均匀塑性变形能力ψb,这可以通过提高冶金质量如细化晶粒来实现.

Abstract :

Strain-controlled cyclic tests have been conducted on high-purity titanium single crystals with different orientations. The fatigue mechanisms of the titanium crystals were studied by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was found that single slip lines, wavy slip lines, double slip lines, twins, and associated slip lines occurred in differently oriented single crystals. A new type of fractographic morphology, parallel traces, was observed. Dislocation patterns and cyclic twins, as well as the mechanical response, were analyzed. The dependence of the deformation mechanisms on the orientations of the single crystals is discussed.

Randomly oriented single crystals of high-purity titanium were prepared by strain annealing and were subjected to multiple-step fatigue testing under strain-controlled conditions, in order to determine their cyclic stress-strain curves (CSSCs), These were found to fall into three groups, depending on orientation and the extent of slip and twinning, For those crystals oriented for single prismatic slip, a plateau was observed in the CSSCs, persistent slip bands (PSBs) occurred, and the plateau stress was 38 MPa. In a second group, oriented for prismatic slip but for which cross-slip and twinning was favored, the plateau was suppressed and the flow stresses were higher. In a third group, connected with orientations on the borders of the unit triangle, extensive hardening occurred, the CSSCs were steep, and there were multiple cases of slip and twinning. The results are interpreted in terms of maps in the stereographic projection recording the Schmid factors for the various deformation modes.

In this study, the low cycle fatigue (LCF) damage evolution of the engineering materials is studied by use of continuum damage mechanics (CDM) theory. Based on thermodynamics, on a continuum damage variable, D, and on the effective stress concept, a continuum damage model of isotropic LCF is derived and is used to analyze the strain-controlled LCF damage evolution of steam turbine blade material 2Crl3 steel. The damage variable D = 1 - Delta sigma/Delta sigma(0) is selected and measured during strain-controlled LCF tests to verify the model, which is in good agreement with the results. The parameters in the model have clear physical meaning and can easily be determined. The evolution of microstructure during fatigue is observed by transmission electron microscopy, which gives the microscopic explanation for LCF damage evolution law of 2Crl3 steel. Abstract :

The effect of austenite on low cycle fatigue in three-phase steel (ferrite-martensite-austenite steel) using SEM in situ observation has been investigated. Two different phenomena were observed. The first one is that, for the initial stages of cracking and propagation, austenite in three-phase steel will decrease the 'notch' sensitivity of the fatigue and prolong the cyclic number of the fatigue crack initiation; hence, make the crack path flex and decrease the crack propagation rate. The other one is that, for the stage of high strain fatigue, due to the strain-induced martensitic transformation, and the boundary of martensite is the low energy path for crack propagation, the austenite will accelerate the fatigue crack propagation. Based on the experiments, an energy criterion is proposed, i.e., when the propagation work of the fatigue at the cracking tip is less than the energy absorbed from the transformation from austenite to martensite, the material's fatigue resistance will be increased; on the contrary, the propagation of the fatigue crack will be accelerated.
