A Novel Portable Absolute Transient Hot-Wire Instrument for the Measurement of the Thermal Conductivity of Solids EI CPCI-S SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

A new portable absolute Transient Hot-Wire instrument for measuring the thermal conductivity of solids over a range of 0.2 to is presented. The new instrument is characterized by three novelties: (a) an innovative two-wires sensor which provides robustness and portability, while at the same time employs a soft silicone layer to eliminate the effect of the contact resistance between the wires and the sample, (b) a newly designed compact portable printed electronic board employing an FPGA architecture CPU to the control output voltage and data processing-the new board replaces the traditional, large in size Wheatstone-type bridge system required to perform the experimental measurements, and (c) a cutting-edge software suite, developed for the mesh describing the structure of the sensor, and utilizing the Finite Elements Method to model the heat flow. The estimation of thermal conductivity is modeled as a minimization problem and is solved using Bayesian Optimization. Our revolutionizing proposed methodology exhibits radical speedups of up to 120, compared to previous approaches, and considerably reduces the number of simulations performed, achieving convergence only in a few minutes. The new instrument was successfully employed to measure, at room temperature, the thermal conductivity of two thermal conductivity reference materials, Pyroceram 9606 and Pyrex 7740, and two possible candidate glassy solids, PMMA and BK7, with an absolute low uncertainty of 2 %.

Abstract :

One-phase liquid and two-phase liquid + vapour equilibrium, isochoric heat capacities (CV) and densities (rho(s)) were measured for ionic liquid (IL) 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl] imide ([ C(6)mim][ NTf2]). Measurements were concentrated near the liquid-gas phase transition curve in order to closely observe the changes. The measurements have been made over the temperature range from (330 to 480) K and pressures up to 20 MPa using a high-temperature, high-pressure, nearly constant volume adiabatic calorimeter. The values of temperature at the liquid-gas phase transition curve for each measured isochore (phase transition parameters, rho(S); T-S) were obtained by analysis of the quasistatic thermograms (readings of PRT, T-tau plot) and barograms (readings of the pressure transducer, P-t plot). The combined expanded uncertainty of the density, rho, and isochoric heat capacity, CV, measurements at the 95% confidence level with a coverage factor of k = 2 is estimated to be 0.06% and 2.0%, respectively.

Abstract :

This article describes a 10-year cooperative effort between the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and five major journals in the field of thermophysical and thermochemical properties to improve the quality of published reports of experimental data. The journals are Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data, The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, Fluid Phase Equilibria, Thermochimica Acta, and International Journal of Thermophysics. The history of this unique cooperation is outlined, together with an overview of software tools and procedures that have been developed and implemented to aid authors, editors, and reviewers at all stages of the publication process, including experiment planning. Both successes and failures are highlighted. The procedures are now well established and are designed to yield maximum benefit to all stakeholders (authors, editors, reviewers, publishers, readers, data users, etc.) through the establishment of procedures and support tools that efficiently serve the specific interests of those involved. All specially designed tools and procedures are described fully, together with their benefits and examples of application. A key feature of the cooperation is the efficient validation of experimental data after peer review but before acceptance for publication. Nearly 1000 articles per year are considered within the scope of this work, with significant problems identified in roughly one-third of these. Full statistics for the findings are given, and a variety of examples of common problems found are given.

The available experimental data for the density and viscosity of liquid cadmium, cobalt, gallium, indium, mercury, silicon, thallium, and zinc have been critically examined with the intention of establishing both a density and a viscosity standard. All experimental data have been categorized into primary and secondary data according to the quality of measurement, the technique employed and the presentation of the data, as specified by a series of criteria. The proposed standard reference correlations for the density of liquid cadmium, cobalt, gallium, indium, silicon, thallium, and zinc are characterized by percent deviations at the 95% confidence level of 0.6, 2.1, 0.4, 0.5, 2.2, 0.9, and 0.7, respectively. In the case of mercury, since density reference values already exist, no further work was carried out. The standard reference correlations for the viscosity of liquid cadmium, cobalt, gallium, indium, mercury, silicon, thallium, and zinc are characterized by percent deviations at the 95% confidence level of 9.4, 14.0, 13.5, 2.1, 7.3, 15.7, 5.1, and 9.3, respectively. All experimental data have been categorized as primary or secondary according to the quality of measurement, the technique employed, and the presentation of the data, as specified by a series of carefully defined criteria. The proposed standard reference correlations for the density of liquid Al+Si, Pb+Bi, and Pb+Sn are, respectively, characterized by deviations of 2.0%, 2.9%, and 0.5% at the 95% confidence level. The standard reference correlations for the viscosity of liquid Al+Si, Pb+Bi, and Pb+Sn are, respectively, characterized by deviations of 7.7%, 14.2%, and 12.4% at the 95% confidence level. All experimental data have been categorized into primary and secondary data according to the quality of measurement specified by a series of criteria. The proposed standard reference correlations for the density of liquid antimony, bismuth, lead, nickel and silver are respectively characterized by standard deviations of 0.8, 0.6, 0.9, 1.7 and 0.9% at the 95% confidence level. The standard reference correlations for the viscosity of liquid antimony, bismuth, lead, nickel and silver are characterized by standard deviations of 8.3, 12.0, 4.8, 14.6, and 3.8% at the 95% confidence level respectively.

Abstract :

New measurements of the thermal conductivity of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), BK7, and Pyrex 7740 are presented. The technique employed is a refined transient hot-wire technique, based on a full theoretical model with equations solved by finite elements for the exact geometry. At the 95% confidence level, the standard deviations of the thermal conductivity measurements of PMMA, BK7, and Pyrex 7740 are 0.47%, 1.0%, and 0.8%, respectively. The technique is absolute and is characterized by an uncertainty of < 1%.

Fully-developed pulsating liquid flows in a three-dimensional wavy wall microtube CPCI-S

Abstract :

Influences of a three-dimensional wavy wall on the fully-developed pulsating liquid flows in microtube were studied in this paper. Fully-developed pulsating liquid flows driven by the pulsating pressure gradient in microtube with non-axisymmetric wavy wall were considered. The pulsating pressure gradient can be split into the steady and the oscillatory terms, and therefore the velocities were split into steady and the oscillatory terms in the same way. The analytical and numerical results show that the variations of disturbances are dependent on those of pulsating frequency. When the frequency increases large enough, subsidiary stresses will approach to their asymptotic solutions. In addition, it is found that the subsidiary stress layers gradually become thinner with increasing of the pulsating frequency, and therefore the wall disturbances are difficult to be transmitted to the center of the flow area. At the low frequency of pulsation, the curve shapes of oscillatory subsidiary stresses are nearly consistent with the cases of steady flow. The variations of phase shifts are between the values -pi/2 and pi/2, which is independent of the choices of parameters (including the choices of oscillatory pressure drop), and the extreme values of them tend to -pi/2 and pi/2 as the pulsating frequency approaches to infinity.
