Abstract :

In wireless orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing communications systems, pilot tones, due to their publicly known and deterministic characteristic, suffer significant jamming/nulling/spoofing risks. Thus, the convectional channel training protocol using pilot tones could be attacked and paralyzed, which raises the issue of anti-attack channel training authentication (CTA), i.e., verifying the claims of identities of pilot tones and channel estimation samples. In this paper, we consider one-ring scattering scenarios with large-scale uniform linear arrays (ULA) and develop an independence-checking coding (ICC) theory to build a secure and stable CTA protocol, namely, ICC-based CTA (ICC-CTA) protocol. In this protocol, the pilot tones are not only merely randomized and inserted into subcarriers but also encoded as diversified subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) simultaneously. Those encoded SAPs, though camouflaged by malicious signals, can be identified and decoded into original pilots for high-accuracy channel impulse response (CIR) estimation. The CTA security is first characterized by the error probability of identifying legitimate CIR estimation samples. We prove that the identification error probability (IEP) is equal to zero under the continuously distributed mean angle of arrival (AoA) and also derive a closed-form expression of IEP under the discretely distributed case. The CTA instability is formulated as the function of probability of stably estimating CIR against all available diversified SAPs. A realistic tradeoff between the CTA security and instability under the discretely distributed AoA is identified and an optimally stable tradeoff problem is formulated, with the objective of optimizing the code rate to maximize security while maintaining maximum stability for ever. Solving this, we derive the closed-form expression of optimal code rate. Numerical results finally validate the resilience of proposed ICC-CTA protocol.

Abstract :

Due to the publicly known and deterministic characteristic of pilot tones, pilot authentication (PA) in multi-user multi-antenna orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems is very susceptible to the jamming/nulling/spoofing behaviors. To solve this, in this paper, we develop a hierarchical 2-D feature (H2DF) coding theory that exploits the hidden pilot signal features, i.e., the energy feature and independence feature, to secure pilot information coding which is applied between legitimate parties through a well-designed five-layer hierarchical coding model to achieve secure multiuser PA (SMPA). The reliability of SMPA is characterized using the identification error probability (IEP) of pilot encoding and decoding with the exact closed-form upper and lower bounds. However, this phenomenon of non-tight bounds brings about the risk of long-term instability in SMPA. Therefore, a reliability bound contraction theory is developed to shrink the bound interval, and practically, this is done by an easy-to-implement technique, namely, codebook partition within the H2DF code. In this process, a tradeoff between the upper and lower bounds of IEP is identified and a problem of optimal upper and lower bound tradeoff is formulated, with the objective of optimizing the cardinality of sub-codebooks such that the upper and lower bounds coincide. Solving this, we finally derive an exact closed-form expression for IEP, which realizes a stable and highly reliable SMPA. Numerical results validate the stability and resilience of H2DF coding in SMPA.

Abstract :

This paper presents an intelligent combustion fault diagnosis approach for V-type marine diesel engines with uneven firing intervals based on the instantaneous crankshaft speed (ICS). First, experimental ICSs of a 16-cylinder marine diesel engine under normal and different degrees of fault conditions are investigated to obtain the most sensitive fault features. A new polar representation method named cyclic-polar-map (CPM) is proposed to effectively demonstrate the fault features. The quantitative radii of the CPM are used to indicate the location and degree of fault. Then, a support vector machine (SVM)-based intelligent fault diagnosis system is developed for automatically detecting the combustion faults with the features extracted from the proposed CPM and the frequency analysis of ICS. In addition, for the SVM training set is not always available in practice, a dynamic model of the crankshaft system is developed to simulate different fault patterns. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed intelligent diagnosis approach is validated by experimental data. The results show that the proposed SVM-based intelligent diagnosis system using both CPM features and frequency domain features of the ICS can obtain good accuracies under different fault degrees at various speed and load conditions. A Gas Sensing Channel Composited with Pristine and Oxygen Plasma-Treated Graphene. PubMed

Abstract :

Oxygen plasma treatment has been reported as an effective way of improving the response of graphene gas sensors. In this work, a gas sensor based on a composite graphene channel with a layer of pristine graphene (G) at the bottom and an oxygen plasma-treated graphene (OP-G) as a covering layer was reported. The OP-G on top provided oxygen functional groups and serves as the gas molecule grippers, while the as-grown graphene beneath serves as a fast carrier transport path. Thus, the composite channel (OP-G/G) demonstrated significantly improved response in NH₃ gas sensing tests compared with the pristine G channel. Moreover, the OP-G/G channel showed faster response and recovering process than the OP-G channel. Since this kind of composite channel is fabricated from chemical vapor deposited graphene and patterned with standard photolithography, the device dimension was much smaller than a gas sensor fabricated from reduced graphene oxide and it is favorable for the integration of a large number of sensing units.

Abstract :

A novel hybrid structure sensor based on cobalt carbonate hydroxide hydrate (CCHH) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was designed for room temperature NH₃ detection. This hybrid structure consisted of CCHH and RGO (synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method), in which RGO uniformly dispersed in CCHH, being used as the gas sensing film. The resistivity of the hybrid structure was highly sensitive to the changes on NH₃ concentration. CCHH in the hybrid structure was the sensing material and RGO was the conductive channel material. The hybrid structure could improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the sensitivity by obtaining the optimal mass proportion of RGO, since the proportion of RGO was directly related to sensitivity. The gas sensor with 0.4 wt% RGO showed the highest gas sensing response reach to 9% to 1 ppm NH₃. Compared to a conventional gas sensor, the proposed sensor not only showed high gas sensing response at room temperature but also was easy to achieve large-scale production due to the good stability and simple synthesis process.

An Improved Recognition Approach for Noisy Multispectral Palmprint by Robust L2 Sparse Representation with a Tensor-Based Extreme Learning Machine. PubMed SCIE

For the past decades, recognition technologies of multispectral palmprint have attracted more and more attention due to their abundant spatial and spectral characteristics compared with the single spectral case. Enlightened by this, an innovative robust L2 sparse representation with tensor-based extreme learning machine (RL2SR-TELM) algorithm is put forward by using an adaptive image level fusion strategy to accomplish the multispectral palmprint recognition. Firstly, we construct a robust L2 sparse representation (RL2SR) optimization model to calculate the linear representation coefficients. To suppress the affection caused by noise contamination, we introduce a logistic function into RL2SR model to evaluate the representation residual. Secondly, we propose a novel weighted sparse and collaborative concentration index (WSCCI) to calculate the fusion weight adaptively. Finally, we put forward a TELM approach to carry out the classification task. It can deal with the high dimension data directly and reserve the image spatial information well. Extensive experiments are implemented on the benchmark multispectral palmprint database provided by PolyU. The experiment results validate that our RL2SR-TELM algorithm overmatches a number of state-of-the-art multispectral palmprint recognition algorithms both when the images are noise-free and contaminated by different noises.

Abstract :

We investigate linear and nonlinear evolution dynamics of light beams propagating along a dislocated edge-centered square lattice. The band structure and Brillouin zones of this novel lattice are analyzed analytically and numerically. Asymmetric Dirac cones as well as the corresponding Bloch modes of the lattice are obtained. By adopting the tight-binding approximation, we give an explanation of the asymmetry of Dirac cones. By utilizing the appropriate Bloch modes, linear and nonlinear asymmetric conical diffraction are demonstrated. We find that both the focusing and defocusing nonlinearities can enhance the asymmetry of the conical diffractions. Electronic Pulses from Pulsed Field Emission of CNT Cathodes EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

We presented a demonstration of infrared laser irradiated field emission electronic pulse based on carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes. Electronic pulses greatly depended on pulsed infrared laser and were almost synchronous with laser pulses. We have designed a pulsed field emission cathode based on CNTs and investigated correlation between electronic pulse and laser pulse, acquiring the shortest width of electronic pulses about 50ms and turn-on field less than 0.14 V/mu m. Besides, we have studied the thermal effect on the pulsed field emission of CNT cathodes caused by laser heating. Interestingly, the thermal effect has caused an enhancement of emission current but resulted in a waveform distortion on short electronic pulses. The application of laser pulses on CNT cathodes would extend conventional electron sources to a pulsed electron source and offered a possibility of pulsed field emission. These results were encouraging us to prepare further studies of ultrafast electronic pulses for high-frequency electron sources.

A pilot spoofer can paralyze the channel estimation in multi-user orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems by using the same publicly known pilot tones as legitimate nodes. This causes the problem of pilot authentication (PA). To solve this, we propose, for a two-user multi-antenna OFDM system, a code-frequency block group (CFBG) coding-based PA mechanism. Here multi-user pilot information, after being randomized independently to avoid being spoofed, is converted into activation patterns of subcarrier-block groups on code-frequency domain. Those patterns, though overlapped and interfered mutually in the wireless transmission environment, are qualified to be separated and identified as the original pilots with high accuracy, by exploiting CFBG coding theory and channel characteristic. Particularly, we develop the CFBG code through two steps, i.e., 1) devising an ordered signal detection technique to recognize the number of signals coexisting on each subcarrier block, and encoding each subcarrier block with the detected number and 2) constructing a zero-false-drop code and block detection-based code via k-dimensional Latin hypercubes and integrating those two codes into the CFBG code. This code can bring a desirable pilot separation error probability, inversely proportional to the number of occupied subcarriers and antennas with a power of k. To apply the code to PA, a scheme of pilot conveying, separation, and identification is proposed. Based on this novel PA, a joint channel estimation and identification mechanism is proposed to achieve high-precision channel recovery and simultaneously enhance PA without occupying extra resources. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed mechanism.
