Independence-Checking Coding for OFDM Channel Training Authentication: Protocol Design, Security, Stability, and Tradeoff Analysis EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

In wireless orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing communications systems, pilot tones, due to their publicly known and deterministic characteristic, suffer significant jamming/nulling/spoofing risks. Thus, the convectional channel training protocol using pilot tones could be attacked and paralyzed, which raises the issue of anti-attack channel training authentication (CTA), i.e., verifying the claims of identities of pilot tones and channel estimation samples. In this paper, we consider one-ring scattering scenarios with large-scale uniform linear arrays (ULA) and develop an independence-checking coding (ICC) theory to build a secure and stable CTA protocol, namely, ICC-based CTA (ICC-CTA) protocol. In this protocol, the pilot tones are not only merely randomized and inserted into subcarriers but also encoded as diversified subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) simultaneously. Those encoded SAPs, though camouflaged by malicious signals, can be identified and decoded into original pilots for high-accuracy channel impulse response (CIR) estimation. The CTA security is first characterized by the error probability of identifying legitimate CIR estimation samples. We prove that the identification error probability (IEP) is equal to zero under the continuously distributed mean angle of arrival (AoA) and also derive a closed-form expression of IEP under the discretely distributed case. The CTA instability is formulated as the function of probability of stably estimating CIR against all available diversified SAPs. A realistic tradeoff between the CTA security and instability under the discretely distributed AoA is identified and an optimally stable tradeoff problem is formulated, with the objective of optimizing the code rate to maximize security while maintaining maximum stability for ever. Solving this, we derive the closed-form expression of optimal code rate. Numerical results finally validate the resilience of proposed ICC-CTA protocol.

Abstract :

Due to the publicly known and deterministic characteristic of pilot tones, pilot authentication (PA) in multi-user multi-antenna orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing systems is very susceptible to the jamming/nulling/spoofing behaviors. To solve this, in this paper, we develop a hierarchical 2-D feature (H2DF) coding theory that exploits the hidden pilot signal features, i.e., the energy feature and independence feature, to secure pilot information coding which is applied between legitimate parties through a well-designed five-layer hierarchical coding model to achieve secure multiuser PA (SMPA). The reliability of SMPA is characterized using the identification error probability (IEP) of pilot encoding and decoding with the exact closed-form upper and lower bounds. However, this phenomenon of non-tight bounds brings about the risk of long-term instability in SMPA. Therefore, a reliability bound contraction theory is developed to shrink the bound interval, and practically, this is done by an easy-to-implement technique, namely, codebook partition within the H2DF code. In this process, a tradeoff between the upper and lower bounds of IEP is identified and a problem of optimal upper and lower bound tradeoff is formulated, with the objective of optimizing the cardinality of sub-codebooks such that the upper and lower bounds coincide. Solving this, we finally derive an exact closed-form expression for IEP, which realizes a stable and highly reliable SMPA. Numerical results validate the stability and resilience of H2DF coding in SMPA.

Abstract :

Most community question answering (CQA) websites manage plenty of question-answer pairs (QAPs) through topic-based organizations, which may not satisfy users' fine-grained search demands. Facets of topics serve as a powerful tool to navigate, refine, and group the QAPs. In this work, we propose FACM, a model to annotate QAPs with facets by extending convolution neural networks (CNNs) with a matching strategy. First, phrase information is incorporated into text representation by CNNs with different kernel sizes. Then, through a matching strategy among QAPs and facet label texts (FaLTs) acquired from Wikipedia, we generate similarity matrices to deal with the facet heterogeneity. Finally, a three-channel CNN is trained for facet label assignment of QAPs. Experiments on three real-world data sets show that FACM outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract :

A single-inductor-multi-output boost converter is presented to boost the low voltage generated by the photovoltaic and thermoelectric generator for the body sensor nodes. A modified single charging single discharging control combined constant on-time control and adaptive output priority is proposed to achieve a good transient response. The adaptive output priority is determined by a hungry algorithm, which just senses the output voltages of the presented converter. Furthermore, an exponentially weighted moving average algorithm is introduced to choose the solar, thermal or stored energy as the supply source. Moreover, the presented converter is self-powered by its own output after starting-up. Finally, the presented converter is designed and verified in the CSMC CMOS 0.18 mu m 1P6M process.

Abstract :

Portable automatic seizure detection system is very convenient for epilepsy patients to carry. In order to make the system on-chip trainable with high efficiency and attain high detection accuracy, this paper presents a very large scale integration (VLSI) design based on the nonlinear support vector machine (SVM). The proposed design mainly consists of a feature extraction (FE) module and an SVM module. The FE module performs the three-level Daubechies discrete wavelet transform to fit the physiological bands of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and extracts the time-frequency domain features reflecting the nonstationary signal properties. The SVM module integrates the modified sequential minimal optimization algorithm with the table-driven-based Gaussian kernel to enable efficient on-chip learning. The presented design is verified on an Altera Cyclone II field-programmable gate array and tested using the two publicly available EEG datasets. Experiment results show that the designed VLSI system improves the detection accuracy and training efficiency.

Abstract :

We presented a demonstration of infrared laser irradiated field emission electronic pulse based on carbon nanotube (CNT) cathodes. Electronic pulses greatly depended on pulsed infrared laser and were almost synchronous with laser pulses. We have designed a pulsed field emission cathode based on CNTs and investigated correlation between electronic pulse and laser pulse, acquiring the shortest width of electronic pulses about 50ms and turn-on field less than 0.14 V/mu m. Besides, we have studied the thermal effect on the pulsed field emission of CNT cathodes caused by laser heating. Interestingly, the thermal effect has caused an enhancement of emission current but resulted in a waveform distortion on short electronic pulses. The application of laser pulses on CNT cathodes would extend conventional electron sources to a pulsed electron source and offered a possibility of pulsed field emission. These results were encouraging us to prepare further studies of ultrafast electronic pulses for high-frequency electron sources.

Due to their synergistic effect, metal nanoparticles (NPs)-graphene hybrids exhibit better catalytic activity and sensing performance in bio application, chemical sensors and Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate than most of other hybrids. To give quantitative description of gas sensing performance depending on metal NPs morphology, we have experimentally acquired NH3 sensing profiles of Ag NPs-graphene hybrids with different morphology, and extracted adsorption heat according to the Langmuir adsorption theory. The relation between sensing performance and catalytic activity of Ag NPs-graphene hybrids has been established. The optimized morphology as size, coverage and degree of dispersion of Ag NPs on graphene results in higher catalytic activity, which is the key point of enhanced sensing performance. The maximum response of Ag NPs-graphene hybrids with optimized morphology is about 2 times the average response of the others. The quantitative description of gas sensing performance depending on surface morphology of Ag NPs-graphene hybrids should pave a way for other sensing areas. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract :

A highly photoactive nitrogen-deficient g-C3N4 photocatalyst with porous frame work has been prepared by a simple, effective, and environmental-friendly method of ethanol thermal treatment. It is found that the as-synthesized catalyst exhibits an enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity for H-2 evolution. The H-2-evolution rate on the treated g-C3N4 is 4.2 times higher than the untreated-C3N4. The treated g-C3N4 and untreated g-C3N4 are characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL), UV-Vis absorption (UV-Vis), photocurrent measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Characterization results show that the ethanol thermal treatment induces nitrogen vacancies and hierarchical porous structure in g-C3N4. Such a structural reconstruction is beneficial for improving optical absorption and hindering photoinduced charger recombination on g-C3N4, resulting in the enhanced photocatalytic activity. This work would offer a reference route to develop high-performance metal-free photocatalysts.

Abstract :

In this paper, we consider secure transmission of a private file, which comprises multiple packets. A network-coding assisted automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) scheme is proposed to improve the security at both file level and packet level. Specially, the ARQ protocol degrades the intercept probability of the whole file at the eavesdropper, while the network coding guarantees the per-packet security. The closed-form intercept probability and outage probability of the whole file and each packet are analytically presented, and we then investigate the tradeoff between the security performance and the outage probability. The proposed scheme is further extended to the cooperative ARQ scenario, and simulation results are provided to corroborate our theoretical findings.
