Environment matters: exploring the relationships between the classroom environment and college students' affect in mathematics learning in China SSCI Scopus

Abstract :

This study explored the relationships between Chinese college students' perceptions of the classroom environment and some affective aspects in the study of mathematics. A total of 2529 students responded to three measures that were specifically designed to assess college students' perceptions of the mathematics classroom environment, their emotional experiences and values of studying mathematics. Comparatively, the students had a higher score on the value of mathematics but lower scores on their emotional experiences of mathematics learning, and the characteristics of the classroom environment had some significant effects on the students' emotional experiences and values of studying mathematics. The eight classroom environmental factors were categorised into three groups according to the nature and extent of their effects on students' affect in mathematics learning. Although most classroom environmental factors had a positive impact on college students' emotional experiences and values in the study of mathematics, the effects of two environmental factors, the difficulty of studying mathematics and teacher support, were of particular interest. Given these results, instructors are encouraged to leave more room for student autonomy, to adopt some innovative learning approaches to promote student collaboration and to pay close attention to the difficulty of the mathematics curricula and competition among students.

Abstract :

This study explores the challenges faced by young lecturers in managerial transformation in elite Chinese academic institutions which aim to develop into world-class universities. Drawing on data from in-depth interviews, the paper discusses how a group of lecturers on tenure-track contracts at a research university in China perceived the impacts of this managerial personnel reform. The study revealed intensified academic pressure and consequent feelings of insecurity, uncertainty and anxiety among the participants. Rigid tenure requirements pushed down research quality, and detracted from the efforts the participants could have devoted to teaching. Further negative impacts were strengthened power hierarchies and increasingly gendered nature of the academic culture.

Abstract :

This study investigated the effects of Chinese tertiary teachers' goal orientations for teaching on their approaches to teaching mediated by teacher engagement. In a survey of 597 Chinese tertiary teachers, the respondents placed particular emphasis on relational and mastery goals and expressed a preference for student-focused approaches to teaching. An emphasis on mastery goals was found to predict a preference for student-focused teaching, whereas ability-approach and work-avoidance goal orientations predicted a preference for teacher-focused teaching. Ability-avoidance and relational goals were found to be positively related not only to teacher-focused approaches but to student-focused approaches to teaching as well. In addition, teacher engagement was found to significantly mediate the effects of ability-approach, mastery and work-avoidance goals on teacher-focused intention, student-focused intention and student-focused strategy. These results have significant implications for Chinese higher-education institutions in light of their transition from teacher-focused to student-focused approaches to teaching.

课程考核作为教学活动的一部分,是人才培养的关键环节之一,对保障人才培养质量至关重要.以2015年QS<em>大学</em>排名前100名中的20所国外一流<em>大学</em>的636门课程作为研究样本,对国外<em>大学</em>本科生与研究生课程的考核方法和不同考核方式所占权重进行了比较研究.研究发现:国外一流<em>大学</em>本科生与研究生课程考核呈现考核方法多样、考核方式灵活、考核方法选择策略相似、主要考核方法的权重比较一致、理论与实践结合课的考核更倾向于使用实践操作方法、必修课考核更倾向于使用考试方法、不同学科的课程采用的考核方法存在差异等特点;同时,本科生与研究生课程在考试与报告两种考核方法的使用比例、考核方式的选择、基础课与专业课使用的考核方法、理论课同理论与实践结合课的考核方法、选修课与必修课的考核方法、不同学科类型课程使用的考核方法等方面存在显著差异.基于此,提出了发展和完善我国高校课程考核方法的对策建议:丰富高校的课程考核方法,广泛实施综合考核方式;根据不同教育层次要求合理选择考核方式方法;根据课程类型灵活选择考核方法,并科学合理地分配不同考核方法的权重.

以陕西省12所高校2012年~2014年获得国家奖学金的335名工程硕士生和872名工学硕士生为研究对象,通过对获奖者的成果和科研实践经历进行比较,对工程硕士培养质量进行了评价.研究表明:在培养过程中,工程硕士生在实践能力培养方面受益较多,工程硕士和工学硕士分类培养成效显著,但是工程硕士生的创新能力有待进一步提高.针对经济新常态下工程硕士教育面临的机遇与挑战,提出了提升工程硕士培养质量的建议.

整合院校影响模型及学习环境理论,基于<em>西安</em><em>交通</em><em>大学</em>本科生就读经历的调查数据,分析了<em>大学</em>生能力发展及其影响因素。结果显示:(1)<em>大学</em>生能力发展不均衡。代表学生认知能力和非认知能力发展的三个指标,增值有多有少。(2)不同因素对学生能力发展的影响在程度和方向上存在差异。在程度上,背景因素、学生投入和学习环境这三个因素的影响力依次递增;而且,课堂环境的影响大于校园氛围的影响.常规投入的影响大于在线投入的影响。在方向上,学习环境和学生投入的不同维度的影响,有的积极,有的消极。高校应重视学生能力的均衡发展,构建有利的学习环境,鼓励和支持主动学习,合理设计教学,规避被动学习。

为了增加研究成果产出,我国高校逐渐加强了对教师发表国际学术期刊论文的要求。为探讨这种压力对青年教师的影响,本研究组对我国西部地区某研究型<em>大学</em>青年教师进行了半结构化访谈研究。研究发现,在“tenure-track”机制下,青年教师面临巨大的发表国际学术期刊论文的压力;被访者指出,加速发表国际学术期刊论文,有损高质量与创新性学术论文的产出;发表国际学术期刊论文的压力还导致青年教师普遍产生“重科研、轻教学”的态度;同时,过度的压力也可能对青年教师的健康及家庭关系产生消极影响。
