Abstract :

Studies of gamma-irradiation to dose levels of 2 MG(g) of two epoxy resin systems have been undertaken. Using both thermally stimulated current measurements and d.c. current measurements, changes in the polymer structure and conduction processes were identified. The conduction process in both cases were found to be ionic as shown by the linear current-voltage characteristics. This behaviour occurred over a temperature range of approximately 120-degrees-C. From this data activation energies of 0.9 and 2.16 eV were obtained for the two resin systems. In addition ion jump distances were found to be of the order of 10(-8) m, as derived from deviation from Ohmic behaviour under high field conditions. In the case of one resin this deviation occurred at appreciably lower applied fields and was attributed to homo-charge injection from the electrodes. The other resin showed some space charge effects in the thermally stimulated discharge spectrum. gamma-Irradiation effects caused in one system a lowering of T(g) with an increase in d.c. conductivity which were both affected by post irradiation annealing. The causes were attributed to ion production and chain scission during irradiation. The other resin system exhibited an increase in T(g) and a decrease in conductivity, these effects being attributed to radiation-induced crosslinking.

Abstract :

Measurements of the effects of gamma-irradiation on two epoxy systems have been undertaken up to doses of 2 MGy. Changes have been shown to occur in the measured values of tan delta and these are related to the dose. In one resin the value of tan delta measured was increased and attributable to d.c. conductivity. In the other resin, which showed a loss peak in the plot of tan delta vs temperature, changes were associated with crosslinking and these were dose dependent. A factorial experiment on one resin system has shown that dose rate effects as well as effects due to different hardener to resin ratio occur, as measured by changes in T(g) and the onset of d.c. conductivity effects on tan delta measurements.

Abstract :

The N-photon interaction of two two-level atoms with a single-mode quantized radiation field is studied. The general expression for the state vector of the atom-field system is presented with the probability amplitudes in analytic form. For the initial condition in which the atoms are both at their upper levels and the field is in a squeezed state, we study the time evolution of the atomic population inversions and that of the statistics of the field. We find that the ratio of the two coupling constants, the initial squeezing of the field, and N have significant effects on the features of the atoms and of the field.

Abstract :

X-ray stress measurements for a 1 mm radius notch were carried out and a residual stress distribution, induced by shot peening in the notched part, was detected. It is shown that the residual stress exhibits a concentration effect at the notch, but the concentration factor is different from that of the loading stress. The residual stress concentration is related to the shape of the specimen and the strength of the material. The fatigue limits of medium carbon steel specimens were tested with rotating bending. The compressive residual stress at the notch part of a specimen tempered at high temperature relaxes rapidly under cyclic loading; the increase in the fatigue limit after shot peening shows more or less the same behaviour as that of a smooth specimen treated in the same way. In contrast, a great improvement in the notch fatigue limit is observed for a specimen tempered at low temperature with a high yield strength. A biaxial shear stress model is used to explain the residual stress relaxation; this model agrees with the experimental data and is better than the Von Mises criterion.

Abstract :

In this paper, the role of carbothermic reduction in making low oxygen CuCr contact materials with high oxygen Cr powder is summarized. Experimental results show that with the help of carbothermic reduction, the total oxygen in Cu50/Cr50 alloys made from high oxygen Cr powder (up to 5000 ppm) is less than 100 ppm. Influence of residual carbon in the CuCr alloys on their dielectric strength and anti-welding property is studied.

We present a computationally uncoupled numerical scheme for the equations of nonlinear one-dimensional thermoelasticity by using the finite-element method for the spatial variables and an uncoupled difference scheme for the time variable. The existence and the uniqueness of approximate solutions are proved and the error estimate is established.

In this paper, we give a new proof of the equivalence of almost sure stability and 1-complete stability.

Abstract :

Valid plane-stress fracture toughness evaluation of short fibre reinforced composites relies essentially on the successful separation of the energy absorbed in the localized crack-tip region out of the total energy absorbed by the cracked material body at large. Three different experimental techniques, all stemming from the energetic interpretation of the J integral, are utilized and their relative merits in the characterization of fracture initiation in short glass fibre reinforced injection-moulded nylon 6.6 examined. Various theoretical aspects concerning these experimental methods are outlined. The rationale behind using a single-edge-notched tension type specimen for the J(c) test is presented. The J(c) value obtained from the compliance calibration method and the quasistatic energy method agree closely and can be considered to be independent of pre-crack length and specimen geometry when the pre-crack length to specimen width ratio (a/w) is larger than 0.45. The extrapolation method fails nevertheless to yield a physically consistent J(c) value, possibly due to its questionable theoretical representation. As no constraint on boundary conditions is necessitated during the course of crack extension, the quasistatic energy is physically more appealing.
