Abstract :

In China in recent years, male live births have exceeded those of females by amounts far greater than those that occur naturally in human populations, a trend with significant demographic consequences. The resulting imbalance in the first-marriage market is estimated to be about 1 million males per year after 2010. These ''excess'' males were not easily accommodated in models with substantial changes in first-marriage patterns, The current sex ratio at birth has little effect on a couple's probability of having at least one son, so future increases in the sex ratio may well occur, especially given increasing access to sex-selective abortion.

Abstract :

Porous silica glass was prepared by sol-gel process from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The effects of solvents (water, ethanol), drying condition, heat treatment temperature on specific surface area and pore size distribution of porous silica were investigated. Gelation process accelerates with an increase of H2O content, while retards with the increase of ethanol amount. Structure changes during heat treatment were studied by means of DTA, XRD. TEM micrographs show that the gel particles shrink after heated at 500 degrees C, thus the average pore size decreases.

Abstract :

Detailed crack tip stress and strain fields are generated for different plane strain fracture specimens. These fields are matched approximately by a tri-parameter characterization of (J, Q, k) in the microstructurally significant region of ductile material. Continuous damage mechanics and the crack tip field of (J, Q, a) are used to quantify constraints in different fracture speciemens and the effect of specimen configuration on the onset of crack growth. The relationships between the theoretical fracture toughness J(c)(HRR) (critical J integral value in HRR field) and the integral values of J in actual specimens are established by an assumption that fracture initiation occurs at the same damage values in both specimens and HRR field. An application to experimental data is explored in this paper.

Abstract :

We propose and study a new constrained independence system. We obtain a sequence of results, including a matching theorem for bases of the system and introducing a set of light elements which give a lower bound for the objective function of a minimization problem in the system. We then demonstrate that the set of triangulations of a planar point set can be modeled as constrained independence systems. The corresponding minimization problem in the system is the well-known minimum weight triangulation problem. Thus, we obtain two matching theorems for triangulations and a set of light edges (or light triangles) that give a lower bound for the minimum weight triangulation. We also prove directly a third matching theorem for triangulations. We show that the set of light edges is a superset of some subsets of edges of a. minimum weight triangulation that were studied before.

Abstract :

In this paper, the CdxHg1-xTe (x=1-0.7) doped silica glass was prepared through two step sol-geI process and in-situ growth technique from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), cadmium acetate, mercury acetate and telluric acid. The influence of various factors on the glass was studied. The structure of the microcrystals was investigated by XRD. The absorption and transmittance spectrum of the composite showed that the shift of absorption edge was in conformity with the quantum size effect. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility X((3)) was measured by the degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM). The values of X((3)) was in the range of 10(-11),10(-12) esu at wavelength of 1.06 mu m.

In this paper, we present a new asynchronous parallel method for solving linear system of equations Ax = b, where A is a nonsingular H-matrix. The method conbines usual asynchonous method [2] and multisplittings of matrices [5]. Convergence is established, rate of convergence is discussed, the region of relaxation parameter omega is given.

Given a set of a points in the plane, it is shown that the csc(2 pi/7)-skeleton of S is a subgraph of the minimum weight triangulation of S. We improve the results in [2] that the root 2-skeleton of S is a subgraph of the minimum weight triangulation of S.

Abstract :

This paper introduces the theory of mechanical vibration to the balance of shaking force/moment of linkage, considers that the frame system which the shaking force and shaking moment of linkage acts on is of three-degree-of-freedom forced Vibrational system, analyzes the relationship between the system response and its excitation which is caused by the X and Y component of shaking force and the shaking moment, and proposes a new compromise optimum balance method, i.e. by means of the frame response value as objective function, and the counterweight mass parameters of links (M(i)*, S-i* ,theta(i)*) as design variable, by altering the variance regularity of shaking force F-x(t), F-y(t), and the shaking moment F-m(t), reduction of the system vibrational response is achieved. How to determine the weighted coefficient for traditional method which use the weighted sum of shaking force and shaking moment as objective function is found out, and using a four-bar linkage as design example, the difference between the common method and the new method is compared. The calculated results show that the new method is very efficient to reduce the system vibrational response. The correctness of the new optimum balance method is verified by experiment in Section 6 of the paper.

Abstract :

Sheet forming is a localization procedure of deformation and damage. In this paper, we firstly give a complete set of constitutive equations for elastic-plasticity coupled with damage. Then, a new continuum damage mechanics based local criterion for ductile fracture, proposed by the author [Engng Fracture Mech. 42, 185-193 (1992)], is presented briefly. Finally, this new criterion is employed to predict the forming limits of sheet. A simple expression for the sheet forming limits prediction is derived, which has practical importance to the selection of forming alloys and the forming technology. Comparisons between the predicted and experimental data are presented and good agreements are found.
