Abstract :

Computing convex hull is one of the central problems in various applications of computational geometry, In this paper, a convex huh computing neural network (CHCNN) is developed to solve the related problems in the N-dimensional spaces, The algorithm is based on a two-layered neural network, topologically similar to ART, with a newly developed adaptive training strategy called excited learning, The CHCNN provides a paralIel on-line and real-time processing of data which, after training, yields two closely related approximations, one from within and one from outside, of the desired convex hull, It is shown that accuracy of the approximate convex hulls obtained is around O[K-1/(N-1)], where K is the number of neurons in the output layer of the CHCNN, When K is taken to be sufficiently large, the CHCNN can generate any accurate approximate convex hull. We also show that an upper bound exists such that the CHCNN will yield the precise convex hull when K is larger than or equal to this bound, A series of simulations and applications is provided to demonstrate the feasibility, effectiveness, and high efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract :

A general theoretical and computation study of the evolution of the statistical distribution of electron beams is presented. The modified Vlasov equation which describes the evolution of the spatial and momentum distribution of the collisionless circular electron beams is developed based on the statistical dynamics theory. A semi-analytical solution of the Vlasov equation is given in the first-order paraxial approximation, and the calculation results show that this solution fits very well with the numerical computation results. As an example, the evolution for electron beams in drifting space and their envelope spreading are investigated using the above theory and methods.

Abstract :

The effects of Ca2+ ions on the structure and dielectric and pyroelectric characteristics of PbTiO3 polycrystals were investigated. With increasing content of Ca, a decrease in tetragonal axial ratio (c/a) was observed as a consequence of shrinkage of the lattice parameter c. The dielectric constant and pyroelectric coefficient increase and Curie temperature (To) shifts toward lower temperature with increasing content of Ca. The theory of ferroelectric soft mode has been developed to illuminate the relationship between the structure and properties of the polycrystal.

Abstract :

The dielectric behavior of a solid solution, 10 mol % lead titanate in lead magnesium niobate, is measured at different frequencies from 100 Hz to 100 kHz in the temperature range from -100 to 120 degrees C. A standardizing method is introduced to analyze the curve of the dielectric constant vs temperature. It results a master curve behavior between the dielectric constant and temperature at temperatures higher than the temperature of the dielectric constant maximum. The dielectric relaxation behavior is analyzed with various models. The best way to characterize the degree of the dielectric relaxation for relaxor ferroelectrics is established using the experimental data. It is indicated that the temperature dependence of the static dielectric constant can be well described by an exponential function, while the temperature dependence of the relaxation time is described by a superexponential function. Based on the specialty of the relaxer ferroelectrics, a distribution function for the relaxation times is introduced and a model is introduced to simulate the dielectric behavior of the relaxor ferroelectrics. The model can express well both the temperature and frequency dependence of the dielectric behavior for a relaxor ferroelectrics. All of the parameters in the fitting formula can be experimentally determined. The model shows that in the low-temperature range, there are two simple relationships about the dielectric frequency spectrum: epsilon ''(omega,T)=(-pi/2)partial derivative epsilon'(omega,T)/partial derivative ln omega and epsilon'=B(T)*(ln omega(0)-ln omega). These relationships are verified by the experimental results. A way to obtain the accurate value of epsilon(infinity) in the low-temperature range is described.

Abstract :

A series of laser melted samples of Al-Si alloys with various Si contents were produced using a 2 kW CO2 laser. The surface characteristics of these laser-treated samples, their microstructures and their substructures were investigated. Experimental results showed that hardened zones of specific area and penetration depth on the sample surface can be obtained with a particular laser power. It was found that the laser treatment refined the aluminium alloy grains; that silicon crystal in eutectic was altered morphologically from lath-like into coralline-like; and that the proportion of silicon in the cc-Al was much more than the saturation content of silicon in the aluminium alloys. After solidification, the super-saturated silicon precipitated out in the [110] direction and in very small rod-like form. X-ray diffraction analysis of the samples illustrated that the lattice parameters of Al were reduced after laser melting. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Abstract :

The low-melting elements Al, Mg and high-melting elements W, Mo have been added into the intergranular regions of Nd22Fe71B7 magnets and their effects on the magnetic properties are investigated. Results show that (1): Al and Mg can greatly enhance the coercivity of Nd-Fe-B magnets with a slight decrease of the remanence, and hardly influence the thermal stability; and (2) W and Mo can also enhance the coercivity of the magnets without the remanence reduction. Two different new phases are found in the low-melting and high-melting element-doped magnets, respectively. The improvement of the coercivity can be attributed to the occurrence of these new phases. It is further found by comparing with the conventional alloying method (the alloying elements are introduced in the process of melting the alloy) that the alloying of intergranular region is a better approach to modify the properties of Nd-Fe-B magnets.

Investigation on the components and the formation of a tribochemical film in the Si3N4 gray iron sliding pair lubricated with distilled water EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

A tribofilm was formed during wear tests of a Si3N4-gray iron pair lubricated with distilled water. In order to clarify the formation process of the film, wear tests of the Si3N4-gray iron pair with different sliding distances were carried out on a ring-block tester using distilled water as lubricant. After the tests, the worn surfaces of the gray iron specimens were examined under SEM. Furthermore, the components and the structure of the film were analysed by AES, XPS, FTIR and XRD. Combining the obtained results, the following aspects are obtained. During the wear tests of a Si3N4-gray iron pair lubricated with distilled water, oxidation and hydrolysis of Si3N4 occur on the wearing surfaces, and the reaction product may be adsorbed by graphite flakes in the iron. As a result, a tribochemical film with a certain thickness and area, which consists of silicagel and graphite, is formed on the wearing surface. The film protects both Si3N4 and gray iron and makes the paired surfaces smooth. Therefore, the friction coefficient of the pair is lowered down to as low as 0.02, and the total wear rates of Si3N4 and iron are near zero. However, because the products of oxidation and hydrolysis of Si3N4 cannot be accumulated on the wearing surface of carbon steel to form an effective tribofilm, both the friction coefficient and the wear rate of the Si3N4-carbon steel pair lubricated with distilled water are high. Abstract :

Several ABO(3) perovskite ferroelectric crystals, PbTiO3, Pb(Zr, Ti)O-3, and BaTiO3 have been in situ grown from amorphous gels with glass elements, and the structural evolution has been systematically investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectra (IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dielectric measurements. It is found that in the Si-contained glass-ceramic systems, Si and B glass elements are incorporated into the crystalline structures, resulting in the variation of the crystallization process, change of lattice constant, and dielectric properties. Some metastable phases expressed by a general formula A(x)B(y)G(z)O(w), (A = Pb and Ba; B = Zr and Ti; G for glass elements, especially for Si) have been observed and discussed.

Abstract :

Erosion wear of AlSi-graphite, Ni/graphite medium temperature abradable seal coatings for turbine engine was investigated. The results showed that at 90 degrees impact angle, the erosion resistance, 1/E-v, increases linearly with the increase of volume fraction of metal phase in the coatings, f(M). At high angle impact, abrasive particles impinge on the coating surface and produce indents and extruded lips, then the lips fall off; and the flattened metal grains exfoliate. At low angle, micro-cutting, plowing and tunneling via pores and non-metal phase are predominate.

Abstract :

The Si raised strip waveguides on SiO2 have been proposed and fabricated, which is based on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material, In the waveguides the SOI technique utilizes silicon and silicon dioxide thermal bonding and back-polishing, An anisotropic etchant is used to produce the trapezoidal Si raised strip waveguides by etching the Si film down to the SiO2 etch-stop buried layer, The transmission losses of the Si waveguides are measured to be less than 0.2 dB/cm at the 1.3 mu m wavelength for the lowest mode TE-like mode.
