Correction of time-intensity curves for tissue perfusion evaluation using ultrasound contrast agent CPCI-S

Abstract :

Instability of scattering of ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) during their flowing with blood will modify time-intensity curve, which imposes a limitation on the ability of time-intensity curve for UCA aided tissue perfusion evaluation. A direct correction method, using the varying scattering of UCA as a function of time, is proposed and verified with an in vitro flow model and in vivo studies on six anesthetic open-chest dogs. The result of experiment demonstrates that the homemade UCA is efficient, and the parameters derived from the corrected time-intensity, especially areas under the curve are more closely correlated with myocardial ischemic degree. This method appears to be a useful addition to existing clinical technique for quantifying tissue perfusion with UCA.

Edge detection algorithms applied to quantitative analysis of X-ray image of osteoma CPCI-S

Abstract :

Quantitative analysis of morphological parameters in clinical diagnosis is more efficient than qualitative analysis. But since the absorptivity of tumour is similar with the tissues around it, and the X-ray image of osteoma has inhomogeneous illumination, the edge of disease area is not clear, traditional edge detection algorithms are not successfully used. In this paper, we apply a radial search algorithm to detect the edge of osteoma. As shown in experiments the extracted edge by this algorithm is true, and the edge possesses accurate location and good continuity. It is suited for quantitative analysis of X-ray image of osteoma, the results provide scientific and objective evidences for clinic diagnosis and cure.

Abstract :

In this paper a fast Holter ECG data compression method based on integer to integer wavelet transform is presented. Due to a shelter function being introduced and careful threshold choices in different scales being adopted, this method can achieve significant data reduction and high signal fidelity simultaneously. It can not only retain the QRS, P, T, ST segment, but also preserve the VLP's information, and can be used to develop a new generation Holter system.

Abstract :

The higher order singular fields of stress and deformation near the tip of a rigid flat inclusion embedded in a damaged nonlinear material are analytically investigated by use of a hodograph transformtion under antiplane shear loading condition. The microscopic damage is considered by damage mechanics approach. Consequently, higher order terms in the asymptotic solutions are obtained. It is found that damage may lead to a weaker singularity of the dominant term of stress, but to stronger singularities of the second order term of stress and the dominant and second order terms of strain compared to that for undamaged material. Also, strain hardening exponent has significant effect on the singularities of inclusion tip quantities.

Flow boiling of Non-Newtonian fluids in a vertical tube CPCI-S

Abstract :

The now boiling behavior of viscoelastic aqueous polymer solutions in a vertical tube at a pressure of 3 MPa is measured. The tube. with a length of 1700 mm and an ID of 8 mm, is heated electrically, and two polymers are used in the tests, a hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and a polyacrylamide (PAM) in concentrations of 300 wppm, 1000 wppm and 1500 wppm respectively. Both polymer solutions are found to have drag-reducing and heat transfer-reducing effects in single phase turbulent flow. Dramatically different flow boiling behavior is observed for the two polymer solutions. The boiling heat transfer is considerably enhanced by the addition of HEC, and the heat transfer coefficient is increased by a factor of 2 to 5 over that of water, however, the boiling heat transfer performance of PAM solutions is poorer than that of water. The HEC solution has a higher CI-IF than water, and on the contrary the CHF of PAM is lower than that of water. Boiling hysteresis occurs with HEC solutions, and the same phenomena are not found with PAM solutions. The two-phase flow pressure drops of both solutions are higher than the pressure drops when the water alone flow as two phase mixture at the same condition, with the pressure drops of PAM solutions being the highest.

Abstract :

In the range of pressure from 3MPa to 18MPa, high pressure steam-water two-phase flow density wave instability in vertical upward parallel pipes with inner diameter of 12mm is studied experimentally. The oscillation curves of two-phase flow instability and the effects of several parameters on the oscillation threshold of the system are obtained. Based on the small perturbation linearization method and the stability principles of automatic control system, a mathematical model is developed to predict the density wave instability threshold. The predictions of the model are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract :

Lie algebraic aberration theory is developed and applied to magnetic deflection systems. Employing this new algebraic tool, all third- and fifth-order canonical magnetic deflection aberrations (including canonical position and momentum aberrations at arbitrary observation planes) are derived. The results are in exactly agreement with those obtained by the conventional successive approximation aberration theory. The present paper lays a theoretical groundwork for further studies on Lie algebraic theory for calculating higher-order aberrations of scanning probe systems.

Abstract :

Bonding strength is an important property of coating layers and the scratch method is widely used for its evaluation. However, the resistance against one stroke for exfoliating the coating layer is a load bearing capacity rather than bonding strength. A continuous indentation machine with an acoustic emission attachment was designed to detect the initiation of film peeling and the critical value was named Pc. Experiments show that even Pc is closely related to the sample hardness, its data are of less deviation and more sensitive to the interfacial condition than the Lc value of scratch test. A better way to evaluate bonding strength is by using contact rolling. Delamination of film occurs after millions of cycles thus stress can be kept in the elastic regime. Under this circumstance, Hertzian analysis can be used to calculate the stress responsible for the peeling of the film. Either cylindrical or spherical contact can be selected for measurement. Since stress concentration is eliminated for ball rolling, the shear stress range at the depth of interface can be precisely determined. The bonding strengths of different coating systems and different film thicknesses can be compared.

Abstract :

Image-based rendering generates views of scene by 2D image transformation instead of difficult physical simulation of conventional graphics with a difficult reconstruction problem, as greatly improves the performance of virtual reality (VR) applications. In this paper we develop efficient methods for synthesizing novel views and adding simulated shading to these novel views, given a collection of example images with depths or in correspondence. The example images are warped to compress storage based on overlap of FOV (field of view). Derived views are generated by warping the compressed images and are passed to the next step in which lighting is added by a post-lighting simulation method to produce the final images. It has two significant advantages. Firstly, it generates warped images from multiple sample images in real time. Secondly, it adds simulated shading in final images, as not only improves the reality of the artificial scene, but also achieves faultless combination of the real and the artificial scenes.
