Abstract :

Industrial competitiveness has become the focal point of study in recent years as global competition has intensified. Although many studies are devoted to the topic, they remain largely conceptual and descriptive, and thus it is difficult to make them operational. Very recently, several studies were conducted to model industrial competitiveness through quantitative analysis, but few consider how to combine the degree and scope of determinant factors of competitive advantages (DFCAs)and competitive strategic goals (CSGs) to maximize a firm's competitiveness, or how to analyze the main problems of creating competitive advantage. The present study proposes a model-based approach to competitive analysis and discusses its multi-phased implementation in a large electronic plant in China. The proposed model can provide a comprehensive analytical tool for industrial competitiveness and can yield useful insights for competitive strategy formulation. Abstract :

How has the history of the twentieth century affected the extent of female disadvantage in child survival in China, South Korea and India, and how has this in turn shaped spousal availability and marriage payments? These three countries have similar kinship systems which generate discrimination against girls, and they show the highest levels of excess female child mortality in the world. This article explores how the extent of excess female child mortality was influenced by historical events in these countries in the period 1920-90, and discusses some of the substantial social ramifications of resulting changes in sex ratios. The authors hypothesize that these changes encouraged the retention of brideprice in China while dowry became the norm in India, and illustrate how these demographic changes have influenced the extent and manifestations of violence against women.

Influence of particle size and sintering parameters on the resistivity of reaction-bonded silicon carbide CPCI-S SCIE

Abstract :

Silicon carbide ceramic has been used widely in industry as electric heating elements. However, the effects of process parameters on silicon carbide resistivity are more complex. In this paper, the effects of particle size, and process parameters on resistivity of reaction-bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) have been investigated. The results show that the resistivity of RBSC increases with the decrease of particle size, and with the increase of pressures of forming precursor and sintering atmosphere. The effect of sintering temperature on the resistivity of this SiC could be ignored. The relationship of microstructure of RBSC and its resistivity has been discussed.

Abstract :

Based on numerical simulation of the temperature field and solid fraction field, a calculating method of net volume variation within isolated zones formed during the solidification process of ductile ire,? (DI) castings is proposed to pl edict shrinkage defects. The foundry technology of a large, complex DI casting-cylinder- block for a marine diesel engine-is optimized by using the proposed method.

Abstract :

Self-reaction method is adopted to produce short fiber-like reinforcing phase for intermetallic compound/metal composite material in this research. An aluminum matrix composite reinforced with NiAl of short fiber shape is fabricated. The microstructure, normal mechanical properties and the fracture behaviors are analyzed. The mechanics analysis on the fractured samples shows that the average strength of the fibers is about 1111 MPa according to a modified shear lag model. There is no evidence of interfacial debonding found. TEM analysis demonstrates that there is small amount of precipitates deposited at the interfacial area.

Improvement of the fretting fatigue and fretting wear of Ti6A14V by duplex surface modification EI CPCI-S SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

Ion-beam-enhanced deposition (IBED) was investigated as a way to increase the fretting fatigue resistance of Ti6Al4V. Both hard CrN coatings with good toughness and soft CuNiIn coatings of low friction have been applied on the base material, and shot peening combined with coatings has also been studied in order to improve the fretting fatigue (FF) resistance. Since these IBED coatings exhibit a good bonding strength even after shot peening, they do not spall off during fretting fatigue and fretting wear tests. When the contact stress is not severe and gross slip contact conditions are operative, both CrN and CuNiIn show a better fretting fatigue resistance than that of shot-peened Ti6Al4V. As the contact stress concentration of fretting fatigue is high, coatings combined with shot peening achieved high levels. The fretting fatigue lifetime is largely dependent on the sliding contact conditions such as contact geometry, sliding distance and contacting materials. Under partial slip, cracks initiate at an early stage limiting the fretting fatigue lifetime, while under gross slip, a much higher fretting fatigue limit is achieved. Compressive residual stresses are particularly important to improve the fretting fatigue lifetime, when crack propagation is predominant during the failure progress. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. Abstract :

A wide-gap thin film cathode of nanometer scale is drafted out. When an anode voltage is applied, a double-triangle barrier will be formed inside the thin film on the substrate, so that the electron emission process is similar to the tunneling in a double-barrier diode. In this paper, the electron-tunneling coefficient is calculated with a matrix approach, the emission current being integrated with the Simpson quadrature method. It is found that both the tunneling coefficient and the emission current are of resonant property. The resonant apex is sharp and the peak-to-peak value reaches six orders of magnitude (10(6)). The resonant points that benefit the electron emission are not few. In practical situation, the applied fields may be greatly intensified by the agglomerations of the local impurities, defects and the interface states at the FEE surface; so the thickness may be well beyond the nanometer scale and the applied field intensity may be greatly reduced.
