State of charge estimation for liquid metal battery using Kalman filter EI Scopus

Abstract :

© 2017 IEEE. This paper proposed an effective battery model together with a state of charge(SOC) estimation model designed specifically for Liquid Metal Battery (LMB). LMB is a potential energy storage battery very suitable for power grid, with long life-span, large charge current and high energy density. The parameters of this LMB model was determined based on the second order Thevenin circuit. The value of these parameters was calculated according to the experimental data and global optimization algorithm. Data comparison between the battery terminal voltage obtained from the experiment and calculated by model is made to prove the accuracy of the LMB model. The SOC estimation model was built using Kalman Filter algorithm and the LMB model established in this paper. The SOC estimation model performed an accurate performance without the necessity of an initial value under different dynamic conditions or static condition. Data comparison between the SOC obtained from the experiment and calculated by model is made to prove the accuracy of the SOC estimation model. The root-mean-square error of these two sets of data is 0.0171.

Online junction temperature extraction and aging detection of IGBT via Miller plateau width EI Scopus

Abstract :

© 2018 IEEE. The width of the Miller plateau during IGBT turnoff process is temperature sensitive and suitable for online junction temperature monitoring. In this paper, the online measurement system to detect this parameter is achieved at the gate driver side. The advantages of using the Miller plateau width for practical applications are discussed by comparison of three existing parameters. An accelerated aging test has been performed to determine the evolution of the Miller plateau width and validate the effectiveness of the method during the entire lifetime. Results show that as the bond-wire degradation develops and the junction temperature rises in the aging process, the Miller plateau width decreases, and it varies conversely with the on-state voltage. Therefore, the Miller plateau width is proposed as the indicator for online aging detection and remaining life prediction of IGBT.

Abstract :

The objective of this paper is to propose a dc current interruption technology for railway dc traction systems, consisting of a dc vacuum circuit breaker with a superconducting fault-current limiter (SFCL). To this end, a 1.5-kV dc circuit breaker prototype is designed, involving a dc vacuum circuit breaker and a resistive-type SFCL serially connected. The dc vacuum circuit breaker is developed with a commutation circuit to generate a reverse injection current, and the resistive-type SFCL is composed of yttrium barium copper oxide superconducting tape. An LC current source tested the 1.5-kV prototype, showing that, when the precharged capacitor voltage is 1.5 kV, the prospective current is 47 kA increasing at a rate of 9.4 A/mu s. The SFCL limits this current to similar to 3 kA (peak value), and then, decreases the current to 2 kA after 6 ms, followed by successful clearance via the dc vacuum circuit breaker. The proposed 1.5-kV circuit breaker will successfully clear short-circuit faults up to 47 kA by first limiting the prospective current and then interrupting it.

Abstract :

A dc circuit breaker (DCCB), which combines a superconducting current-limiting technology and a self-excited oscillation interrupting technology, was proposed. The proposed DCCB includes a superconducting current-limiting module and an interrupter module. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of a transverse magnetic field (TMF) on dc interruption based on the self-excited oscillation principle. The dc interruption characteristics of CO2 and SF6 were investigated by applying a TMF of 0 and 200 mT with a puffer-type structure as a benchmark. The experimental results show that applying a TMF of 200 mT can significantly reduce the arcing time compared with a TMF of 0 mT and puffer-type structure. The dc interruption capacity for the SF6 insulation is higher than that for the CO2 insulation in the interrupter module under the same experimental condition. The simulation results of rated voltage of 10 kV show that the superconducting current-limit module limited the short current of 20 kA to less than 1 kA, and the arcing time was 4.5 ms. The results of rated voltage of 200 kV, short current of 30 kA, show that the DCCB only needed to interrupt the limited current of 3.5 kA and the overvoltage was less than 200 kV.

Research on the Factors Influencing the Measurement Errors of the Discrete Rogowski Coil EI SCIE Scopus

Abstract :

An innovative array of magnetic coils (the discrete Rogowski coil-RC) with the advantages of flexible structure, miniaturization and mass producibility is investigated. First, the mutual inductance between the discrete RC and circular and rectangular conductors are calculated using the magnetic vector potential (MVP) method. The results are found to be consistent with those calculated using the finite element method, but the MVP method is simpler and more practical. Then, the influence of conductor section parameters, inclination, and eccentricity on the accuracy of the discrete RC is calculated to provide a reference. Studying the influence of an external current on the discrete RC's interference error reveals optimal values for length, winding density, and position arrangement of the solenoids. It has also found that eccentricity and interference errors decreasing with increasing number of solenoids. Finally, a discrete RC prototype is devised and manufactured. The experimental results show consistent output characteristics, with the calculated sensitivity and mutual inductance of the discrete RC being very close to the experimental results. The influence of an external conductor on the measurement of the discrete RC is analyzed experimentally, and the results show that interference from an external current decreases with increasing distance between the external and measured conductors.

Abstract :

The objective of this paper is to determine the influences of the transverse magnetic field (TMF) and the axial magnetic field (AMF) on prestrike inrush current arc behaviors in vacuum interrupters (VIs) during capacitive making processes. Two types of cup-type VI contacts were used: TMF contacts and AMF contacts. The contact diameter of the VIs was 48 mm. The insulating envelopes of the VIs were transparent, and there was no metal vapor shield inside the VIs, which were arranged for the observation of the prestrike arcs. The inrush current arc behaviors were recorded by a high-speed charge-coupled device video camera. The experimental results revealed that the VIs of cup-type AMF contact showed a higher dielectric strength than those of cup-type TMF contact during the making operations of inrush current. In addition, the arcs in VIs of cup-type TMF contact tended to he intense arcs that caused serious welding than those of VIs of cup-type AMF contact. Moreover, the cup-type AMF contact effectively reduced the prestrike arc erosion on the contact surfaces than those of TMF contact during the prestrike process of inrush current.

Abstract :

The objective of this paper is to determine arcing contact gap of a 126-kV horseshoe-type bipolar axial magnetic field vacuum interrupter. Drawn arc experiments were carried out in a demountable vacuum. Experimental current ranged from 12-to 40-kA rms. Based on the vacuum arc behavior, minimum arcing contact gap D-1 and maximum arcing contact gap D-2 were defined. When average opening speed within 20 mm (v(1)) was 1.9, 2.3, and 2.6 m/s, D-1 was determined as 15.3, 16.8, and 14.3 mm, respectively. In addition, D-1 reflected a peak effect with v1. When average opening speed within 40 mm (v(2)) was 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8 m/s, D-2 was determined as 38.5, 36.7, and 36.1 mm, respectively. Uncontrollable arc mode appeared when current was higher than 32 kA with arc duration of 9 ms. The critical contact gap to avoid uncontrollable arc mode decreased as a liner function of arc current. Based on the experimental results, quantitative design method of three-interval opening velocity for the 126-kV horseshoe-type vacuum circuit breaker was proposed. For short-circuit current interruption test duty T100s, lower limit value of v(1) and upper limit value of v(2) were determined as 2.5 and 2.9 m/s with a prospective minimum arcing time of 7 ms.

In the case of back-to-back capacitor banks switching, the inrush current arcs can locally melt the contact surfaces of vacuum interrupters (VIs) during the prestrike process. The contact materials significantly influence the behaviours of the inrush current prestrike arcs. The objective of this paper is to determine the influence of contact materials on prestrike arc behaviours of VIs during capacitive making processes. Six identical 12-kV VIs were used in the experiment after the proposed conditioning. The contact diameter of the VIs was 48 mm, and the insulating envelope was transparent. There were no metal vapour shields inside the VIs to enable the observation of the prestrike arcs. Two different contact materials (CuCr50/50 and CuW10/90) were used in the experiment. Test inrush currents were set to 5-, 10-, and 20-kA peak values, respectively. The inrush current arc features were recorded by a high-speed charge-coupled device video camera. It is discovered that the contact materials have a significant influence on the prestrike gaps. Moreover, the prestrike arcs in VIs with the CuW10/90 contact material tend to be more diffuse than those in VIs with the CuCr50/50 contact material. The results indicate the impact of different contact materials on the prestrike arc behaviours and reveal the contact erosion patterns for different materials.

Abstract :

The amplitude and rise time of fault currents can be reduced by installing a resistive-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) in a voltage-source converter high-voltage DC (VSC-HVDC) system. Such an SFCLcan provide sufficient time for a mechanical-type dc circuit breaker to interrupt a fault current. The objective of this paper is to elucidate the dc-current-limiting characteristics of Yttrium Barium Copper Oxygen (YBCO)-coated conductor tapes for a wide range of prospective currents ( ranging from 50 to 10 kA). The factors investigated include critical currents (Ic) of the tape of 102 and 225 A, circuit time constants of 1 and 3 ms, and rated dc voltages of 250 and 500 V. The experimental results show that the limited current remains nearly constant with prospective current when the prospective current is higher than ten times Ic. The circuit time constant affects only the peak value and rise rate of the limited current. A single tape ( I-c = 102 A) can limit a 10-kA prospective current to a peak value of 555 A. The limited current for a rated voltage of 500 V is always higher than that for a rated voltage of 250 V.

The objective of this paper is to determine the high-current vacuum arc mode transition diagram of a horseshoe-type axial magnetic field (AMF) contact with long contact gap. Drawn arc experiments were carried out in an L-C discharging circuit. Horseshoe-type contacts with contact material of CuCr50 and contact diameter of 120 mm were arranged in a demountable vacuum chamber. Full contact gap was 60 mm. The experiment current level ranged from 4 to 40 kA, stepped by 4 kA. Prospective arcing time was set as 2, 5, and 9 ms, respectively. The evolution of vacuum arc behavior was observed using a high-speed camera. Nonsynchronous evolution phenomenon of twin parallel arc columns was observed. With current level ranged from 24 to 40 kA, the maximum nonsynchronous duration transiting from small-gap constricted column mode to diffuse column mode, from diffuse column mode to diffuse arc mode, and from diffuse arc mode to multicathode-spot arc mode were 0.98, 1.09, and 1.55 ms, respectively. The nonsynchronous duration in various vacuum arc modes was determined as well. Summarizing all arc mode transition points in the experiment, a vacuum arc mode transition diagram of the horseshoe-type AMF contact was proposed. Boundary of uncontrollable arc region was determined, which could provide criteria of maximum arcing contact gap design. Besides, an effective arcing region was defined according to distribution of AMF and arc behaviors, in which AMF on the contact surface plane was higher than 75% Baxial-max.
