Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to determine the erosion characteristics of bipolar axial magnetic field contact exposed to high-current vacuum arcs. A pair of horseshoe-type contacts with contact diameter of 120 mm and contact material of CuCr30 (30% Cr), were arranged in a demountable vacuum chamber. Drawn arc experiments were carried out in an L-C discharging circuit. Arc current ranged from 4 kA to 40 kA. Vacuum arc behaviors were recorded by a high-speed camera. After experiments, vacuum arc behaviors and macroscopic erosion characteristics were analyzed, and the whole contact surface was divided into three parts - two serious erosion regions and a slight erosion region. Then microstructures of contact surface and cross section in each region were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). For the results, the molten craters in the slight erosion region of the contact are smaller in size and fewer in number than in the serious erosion regions. And the molten layer distribution on the contact surface was asymmetrical due to the imbalance of arc columns. © 2018 IEEE.
