Abstract:
This paper proposes a new fast current-limiting HVDC circuit breaker scheme, which is based on the existing hybrid HVDC circuit breaker. The new HVDC circuit breaker topology consists of a main current branch (mechanical switch K, main submodule (MSM)), a transferring submodule (TSM) and an energy-dissipation module (MOV branch). The TSM adopts a half diode-bridge topology, and it is in series with a fault current-limiting submodule (FCLSM), the FCLSM consists of a half diode-bridge, a current-limiting resistor and a MOV unit. This new HVDC circuit breaker scheme can reduce the use of diode with 50% than before, and improve the economy effect largely. The proposed HVDC circuit breaker scheme is simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC finally. The simulation results show that the HVDC circuit breaker scheme can lower the DC fault current peak value (decreased by 14%) effectively than before, make the duration time of the fault current and MOV absorption energy decreased with 16.2% than previous. © 2018 IEEE.
