Abstract:
In order to investigate the characteristics of overvoltage on typical grounding faults and check the reasonability of current arrester arrangement ±1 100 kV HVDC converter station, the grounding faults occurred in both converter stations were analyzed based on Zhundong-Wannan HVDC transmission project using PSCAD. Overvoltage caused by following situations were taken into calculation under bipolar full voltage, mono-polar metallic return, and mono-polar ground return styles (grounding fault at top of converter, grounding fault transformer winding at valve side, and grounding fault at DC bus and DC line). Moreover, the characteristics of overvoltage waveform were analyzed and the maximum voltage and absorbed energy of corresponding arresters are provided. The calculation results indicate that the energy caused by faults at rectifier side is 10 times as much as that at inverter side. The key points' overvoltage values are all below their insulation withstanding level and the energy absorbed by the arresters is below the energy absorption ability under current arrester arrangement. This arrangement is reasonable. © 2017, High Voltage Engineering Editorial Department of CEPRI. All right reserved.
