Abstract:

The bonding strength of vapor deposited hard films has been investigated by the rolling contact fatigue test. The mechanical parameter of dominating bonding strength is the shear stress range at the interface. By numeral calculation, quantified stress distribution can be obtained for film/substrate system. Rolling contact fatigue test is insensitive to non-interfacial properties. Ball rolling contact fatigue test can not only show the effects of interfacial factors on bonding strength but also be a better testing method than cylindrical one.
