Institutional support and firms' entrepreneurial orientation in emerging economies EI SSCI Scopus

Abstract :

In recent years, many governments in emerging economies have used macro-level institutional support to boost entrepreneurship, but the actual impact of institutional support on firms' entrepreneurial orientation (EO) remains unclear. To provide a holistic understanding of this impact, we examine the relationship between institutional support and three specific dimensions of EO-proactiveness, innovativeness, and risk-taking-and we explore how these relationships are contingent on firm ownership and the industry life cycle. A two-study, mixed-methods empirical design confirms our hypotheses. Specifically, Study 1 surveys 303 Chinese firms and finds that institutional support has a decreasingly positive relationship with proactiveness, an increasingly positive relationship with innovativeness, and a positive linear relationship with risktaking; each of these three relationships is weaker for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) than for non-SOEs and for firms in fast-growing industries than for firms in slow-growing industries. Study 2 conducts a scenario-based experiment using6 133 MBA students, and its results again support the main effects hypotheses.

Contact network analysis of Covid-19 in tourist areas--Based on 333 confirmed cases in China. PubMed SCIE

Abstract :

The spread of infectious diseases is highly related to the structure of human networks. Analyzing the contact network of patients can help clarify the path of virus transmission. Based on confirmed cases of COVID-19 in two major tourist provinces in southern China (Hainan and Yunnan), this study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics and dynamic contact network structure of patients in these two places. Results show that: (1) There are more female patients than males in these two districts and most are imported cases, with an average age of 45 years. Medical measures were given in less than 3 days after symptoms appeared. (2) The whole contact network of the two areas is disconnected. There are a small number of transmission chains in the network. The average values of degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and PageRank index are small. Few patients have a relatively high contact number. There is no superspreader in the network.

A Chain Multiple Mediation Model Linking Strategic, Management, and Technological Innovations to Firm Competitiveness SSCI

Abstract :

Purpose - This study attempts to build an integrated framework to discuss the influence of three types of innovations, i.e. strategic, management, and technological innovations, on firm competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach - Paired survey responses are collected from 303 firms located in China. A confirmatory factor analysis is implemented with SPSS AMOS software to check the reliability and validity of all measures through structural equation modeling. Four hypotheses are empirically examined with SPSS PROCESS Macro in combination with a bias-corrected bootstrapping technique to test the chain multiple mediation model linking strategic, management, and technological innovations to firm competitiveness. Findings - Although strategic, management, and technological innovations are carried out at different organizational levels, they formulate a holistic framework to jointly improve firm competitiveness. Strategic innovation strengthens firm competitiveness through three parallel routes, i.e. via management innovation, via technological innovation, and via the serial mediating mechanism of management and technological innovations. Also, the mediation effect of management innovation is significantly stronger than that of technological innovation. Originality/value - This study integrates strategic, management, and technological innovations into the process of improving firm competitiveness to account for their joint influences, challenging the conventional paradigm where different types of innovations are investigated separately. Cross-domain knowledge flow, exchange, and combination are realized within the broad innovation construct.

How could firms benefit more from absorptive capacity under technological turbulence? The contingent effect of managerial mechanisms SSCI Scopus

Abstract :

Based on the knowledge-based view, this paper examines how firms can achieve an enhanced new product performance from the absorptive capacity under technological turbulence. By examining 165 Chinese pharmaceutical firms' data, this paper found that under technological turbulence, the benefits of absorptive capacity on new product performance will decrease; however, if firms maintain complementary managerial mechanisms (technological environmental scanning mechanism and coordination mechanism in this paper), the decrease effect of technological turbulence could be mitigated. Theoretically, the negative moderating effect of technological turbulence extends the investigation of the under assumptions of absorptive capacity and enriches the research on the contingency context of ACAP. Moreover, the examination of the alleviation effect regarding the managerial mechanisms responds to the scholar's appeals for more research focusing on management factors in absorptive capacity and product development research. The results also highlight the managerial-environment fit in the new product development area. Practically, this paper offers managerial implications for managers: they should focus more attention on technological breakthroughs so as to prepare early for any potential uncertainties and opportunities; moreover, managers could cultivate the managerial mechanisms to enhance knowledge monitoring and sharing activities, which could be utilised to buffer the uncertainty and update the firm's ACAP.

Abstract :

The multifaceted nature of firm innovation has prevented researchers from fully explaining the relationship between firm innovation and green management. This study, building on the Schumpeterian theory of innovation, explores this relationship by examining three major types of firm innovation-strategic innovation, managerial innovation, and product innovation-and their respective relationships with green management, considering several dimensions of environmental turbulence as distinctive boundary conditions. We propose that both strategic innovation and managerial innovation facilitate green management, which in turn mediates these effects on new product performance. The results of a survey of 303 Chinese firms provide strong support for this mediating logic. Moreover, we find that market turbulence weakens the effect of strategic innovation on green management whereas technological turbulence strengthens such effect but the effect of managerial innovation on green management is not influenced by environmental turbulence. Our research contributes to the innovation as well as green management and sustainability literatures by offering a framework in which to analyze firm innovation and green management and by showing how firms pursue sustainability and prosperity under specific environmental conditions.

Boundary Conditions of the Curvilinear Relationships between Environmental Corporate Social Responsibility and New Product Performance: Evidence from China SCIE SSCI

Abstract :

This study examines whether a firm's environmental corporate social responsibility advances the growth of its new product performance, and investigates the moderating roles of a firm's heterogeneous local institutional environment and ownership type. Based on a multi-informant survey dataset of 303 Chinese firms, we found that a firm's environmental corporate social responsibility has a U-shaped relationship with the firm's new product performance. In addition, compared with non-state-owned enterprises, state-owned enterprises with a higher environmental corporate social responsibility would receive relatively lower new product performance. Firms located in the provinces with a lower local institutional development level and higher environmental corporate social responsibility may experience relatively higher new product performance than firms located in the provinces with a higher local institutional development level.

Abstract :
