Abstract:

By using the conjugated heat transfer computational method, heat transfer characteristics in the straight through the labyrinth seal used in a typical gas turbine were numerically investigated and the predictions were compared with the experimental data. At two different sealing clearances, the Nu distributions on the rotor and stator surfaces were computed for the smooth labyrinth seal with 13 fins. The calculated Nu distributions agree well with the experimental data in a range of Re numbers. The results show that the turbulence model has a significant effect on the heat transfer computations. Among the selected eddy viscosity turbulence models, the k-ω and SST models show superior accuracy to the k-Ε and k-Ε RNG models which over-predict Nu by about 70%. On the labyrinth seal stator, Nu increases in the axial direction before the first clearance while it fluctuates with a certain value after the first clearance. On the rotor surface, Nu increases in the axial direction in the chamber region and jumps sharply in the clearance region. The temperature gradients in the solid domains of the stator and rotor increase with an increase in Re, but the distribution profiles of Nu in the axial direction are nearly similar for each Re.
